Hello learners and parents!

I’m glad to have you joining me as we delve into a fun way of playing guitar!

This class is the second installment in my series of flatpicking classes, however the individual series’ do not build on each other and can be taken in any order.

In this six-week class my learners will be introduced to flatpicking (playing melody with a pick) on guitar. We will not be learning chords in this class, we will only be looking at melodies.

Learners do not need to know anything about flatpicking, but it is best if they have some experience with the instrument already as far as tuning, strumming, chords, etc.

For each tune we will have a simple starter version and a slightly more advanced secondary version. Learners can start with the first version and then move on to the second when they feel they have mastered the first. Learners who are more advanced already are welcome to skip the basic version and just do the second one.

There is no pressure to keep up with other learners, we are all just here to enjoy learning some new stuff together!

Tunes will be presented for learning in both standard notation, tablature, and audio recording, all of which will be posted in the classroom a week prior to each lesson so learners can review and begin working on material ahead of time if they choose.

The instrument appropriate for this class is a six string acoustic guitar in standard tuning.

I grew up on a farm in Tennessee (USA) and in addition to music I also love raising rabbits, gardening, and reading! I and my husband currently live with our five beautiful children in the state of North Carolina. I am excited to be part of the Outschool family!

Music has always been a big part of my life, starting with classical piano, which I began at age 8, taking private lessons from a professor at the University of Tennessee. Later on, in my teens, my interests shifted to strings and traditional Appalachian and Celtic music. I learned from many people, including bluegrass musician Justin Moses and as a student of Jim Wood at the Jim and Inge Wood School of Music. As a young adult, I worked as a volunteer interpreter at Cade’s Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, teaching park visitors about Appalachian music. I have played professionally for weddings and other events, in restaurant house bands, as well as at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN. I have led traditional music demonstrations for public school classes, in addition to teaching privately for many years.
I am passionate about introducing young people to traditional Appalachian and Celtic music and helping them perfect their skills!
I primarily teach fiddle/violin and Appalachian old-time and Celtic music, but also bluegrass, Western swing and Texas contest-style fiddle. I also play guitar, both standard and Celtic (DADGAD), piano, mandolin, recorder, penny whistle, mountain dulcimer, ukulele and Irish bouzouki.

I see each learner as a unique individual and cater my teaching approach to best suit their needs and interests.
