This ongoing book club will rotate through all of the Guardians of Ga'hoole books in order, so if your child needs more than one week to read a book, that's fine! You can jump into the lessons when it is a good time for your family. Each lesson will focus on a different literary skill that is necessary for students to become proficient, critical readers; therefore, each essential class is a stand-alone lesson. We will begin by reading the prequel first and then begin reading the books in order. Lessons will roughly follow the same format: First, the class will spend a few minutes sharing important feelings and/or events in their life since the last time the class met. This is an essential time for bonding and building trust between class members. Second, I will lead a discussion about each book's characters, setting and plot. Next, the specific literary focus will be presented. Last, each student will have a chance to speak about their own opinions regarding the book of the week. The lesson schedule and literary skill focus will be as follows: Weeks of September 8, January 26 The Rise of a Legend Character Development Weeks of September 15, February 2 The Capture Setting Development Weeks of September 22, February 9 The Journey Exposition Weeks of September 29, February 16 The Rescue Conflict Weeks of October 6, February 23 The Siege Rising Action Weeks of October 13, March 2 The Shattering Climax Weeks of October 20, March 9 The Burning Falling Action Weeks of October 27, March 16 The Hatchling Resolution Weeks of November 3, March 23 The Outcast Theme/Main Idea Weeks of November 10, March 30 The First Collier Genre Weeks of November 17, April 6 The Coming of Hoole Motif Weeks of November 24, April 13 To Be a King Symbolism Weeks of December 1, April 20 The Golden Tree Connections Weeks of December 8, April 27 The River of Wind Similes/Metaphors Weeks of January 12, May 4 Cause and Effect Weeks of January 19, May 11 The War of the Ember Verisimilitude
