This survey course of the "gross" themes such as mummification, bloody sacrifices, brutal warfare, gross diet and hygiene in the ancient and the medieval history of various countries and regions offers a multidisciplinary introduction to unusual historical, cultural, and political perspectives to young learners. Every week Dr. Brezina will offer an initial understanding of the gross history of a unique place (see the list below). Topics included in the course: Ancient Egypt Ancient Greece Ancient Rome Ancient Mesoamerica Ancient China Medieval Europe Weekly Schedule: Week 1: To be the Pharaoh in Egypt Week 2: The pets, food, fashion, hygiene and free time in Egypt Week 3: The Gods and the Mummies Week 4: The doctors in Egypt Week 5: Greeks and Their Food Week 6: Greeks and Their Medicine and Hygiene Week 7: The Punishment in Greece

This class has two specific goals. One is to provide students with basic factual (although unusual) knowledge of the ancient and the medieval history of various countries/regions and their people. Second, Dr. Brezina hopes to make learning about the past fun through an engaging and interactive discussion-based format.

The study of the ancient and medieval history of various countries and regions deals generally with some sensitive topics in history such as war, civil war, and other conflicts. Dr. Brezina takes a great care to present the content in an age-appropriate manner.

There are many sources that are used for teaching the ancient and medieval history of countries/regions in this course. Dr. Brezina studied various primary and secondary sources (articles, books, dissertations, etc.) during his years as a teacher and professor of history that will allow him to interpret history objectively and address the full range of a variety of peoples' histories and historical perspectives. For example, he will draw from these books: Cookery and Dining in Imperial Rome by Apicius, Ancient Aztecs by Michal Burgan, A History of Europe by Norman Davies, The Oxford History of Medieval Europe by George Holmes, and Medieval Europe by Chris Wickham (However, Dr. Brezina does not require students to purchase or use these books.)
