¿Con la esperanza de evitar el proverbial "deslizamiento del verano"? ¡Este curso intensivo de gramática de seis semanas tiene como objetivo fortalecer y desarrollar la base gramatical de cada estudiante para que esté preparado para el éxito en todas sus actividades académicas!

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Nouns: Subjects & Subject Complements
Students will identify nouns and their function in a sentence with a focus on subjects and subject complements
Lesson 2
Nouns: Objects & Object Complements
Students will identify nouns and their function in a sentence with a focus on objects and object complements
Lesson 3
Appositives; Possessive Nouns; Review
Students will be able to identify the various functions nouns play in a sentence by examining possessive nouns and the role of the appositive phrase in a sentence
 Week 2
Lesson 4
Descriptive Adjectives; Position of Adjectives
Students will identify adjectives and their purpose in the sentence based on who/what the adjective is describing and the position of the adjective in the sentence structure
Lesson 5
Types of Adjectives: (Demonstrative, Interrogative, Comparative, Superlative)
Students will make distinctions between the types of adjectives and their functions in a sentence
Lesson 6
Adjective Phrases & Clauses
Students will identify adjective phrases and clauses and will be able to identify what noun the respective phrase/clause is modifying
 Week 3
Lesson 7
Pronouns: Person, Number, Gender, Subject, Object
Students will understand the grammatical definition of pronoun and the rules that state it must agree with the noun it replaces in number, gender, subject, and object
Lesson 8
Pronouns: Possessive, Intensive, Reflexive
Students will learn about the various types of pronouns and their function in a sentence
Lesson 9
Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement
Students will learn how to identify and rectify mistakes in pronoun-antecedent agreement (commonly tested on exams such as the SAT and ACT)
 Week 4
Lesson 10
Verbs: Participle Parts; Transitive and Intransitive
Students will identify the verb in a sentence and understand the different types and functions of a verb (e.g. transitive and intransitive)
Lesson 11
Troublesome verbs, Linking verbs, Active/Passive Voice
Students will understand the various types of verbs and the roles the play based on the context of the sentence
Lesson 12
Verb Tenses and Moods; Subject-Verb Agreement
Students will identify tenses and moods associated with root verbs; students will also identify errors in subject-verb agreement
 Week 5
Lesson 13
Verbals: Participles
Students will understand the definition of a verbal and how a participle meets that definition; students will be able to identify a participle and participle phrase in a sentence and explain its function
Lesson 14
Verbals: Gerunds
Students will understand the definition of a verbal and how a gerund meets that definition; students will be able to identify a gerund and gerund phrase in a sentence and explain its function
Lesson 15
Verbals: Infinitives
Students will understand the definition of a verbal and how an infinitive meets that definition; students will be able to identify an infinitive and infinitive phrase in a sentence and explain its function
 Week 6
Lesson 16
Adverbs, Prepositions, and Types of Sentences
Students will be able to identify adverbs and prepositions in a sentence; students will also be able to identify whether a sentence is compound, complex, or compound-complex (and why)
Lesson 17
Conjunctions, Interjections, Punctuation, & Capitalization
Students will be able to identify conjunctions, interjections, and various forms of punctuation. Students will be able to use them correctly in a sentence along with proper capitalization
Lesson 18
Diagramming Sentences
The course will conclude with students putting together all of the knowledge they acquired over the six weeks to diagram a sentence or two.
  • Students will receive a comprehensive overview of grammar with a focus on how nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and various types of clauses and phrases function in a sentence. Students will become more effective writers and speakers through their enhanced knowledge of English grammar. Students will also be better equipped for tests such as the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and state exams.

--10+ years experience in 7-12th grade classroom (public & private)
--3+ years experience teaching intro college courses (ENGL 1301, 1302, American & British Literature, Intro to Humanities)

Detalles: Students will be asked to complete 30 minutes to 1 hour of homework per week to demonstrate understanding of the topics discussed. These are not worksheets but real life, practical applications of the grammar concepts.

Detalles: Grades can be provided by parent request. Grades will be based on class participation, attendance, and submission of any out of class assignments.
We will refer several times over the course of the class to "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and White. It is optional whether students choose to obtain their own copy.
