Experiencia de clase

This class is related to the editing content in my "The Importance of Writing Letters" course, but is intended as a stand-alone class if students do not need writing support. It is designed for students who already know basic reading, grammar, and spelling conventions in English.

After writing a first draft, students often balk at reviewing and revising a work they have already written. The objective of this class is to have students discuss the past errors committed by others and learn from them.

First I will ask students to consider why they write. Who is their audience? What are their writing goals?

Next, we will discuss the differences between oral language to written language. Students will listen to a poem full of homophones. They will consider how easily things can be misspelled if you are not careful about context.

Next, the class will focus on determining how one letter, word, sentence, or even punctuation mark can change the meaning of a piece. Examples of a comical nature will be introduced, as in "Please eat, Grandma" instead of "Please eat Grandma." Students will consider hypothetical examples of increasing length and complexity to determine how the writer could fix their work.

I will also introduce historical errors that professionals and other famous figures have committed. Students will discuss how editing is often a full-time job other people do to prevent these errors from occurring. We will briefly review the website application Grammarly as a resource.

Finally, students will discuss their future plans to edit their work.

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Born in Lima, Peru. American through and through! I will be forever grateful to my parents for agreeing to raise me in a bilingual manner! My training includes teaching certification from the State of Connecticut and a master's degree in speech-language pathology. I have worked for a local school district for 5 years continuously, and for two different states for the past two year online. I have also had the privilege of teaching English on an individual basis online for a total of two years. Currently I work in the schools and am home due to the temporary shutdown.

I wholeheartedly believe that teaching individually or small groups is my calling! My main interest in teaching is identifying a student's strengths and assisting with goal-setting. "One small step" for one person may be "one giant leap" for someone else! (Thanks Neil Armstrong!)

My interests are wide but in general my preference would be to make classes designed for small group discussion. I have worked with many bilingual children on an individual basis, and have conducted research in language acquisition. Through my work as an online ESL teacher I have I found a deep appreciation for taking a student's strengths and interests and using this background knowledge to help them feel more comfortable embarking on new adventures. I also have found considerable flexibility in my job experience in that I could pick and choose from a variety of curriculum offerings to suit the needs of my students rather than the opposite approach. I have worked closely with special education teachers to ensure that all children in the classroom environment had the means to access the curriculum.

I have been with Outschool for 2.5 years now (I signed up long ago but technically have only started teaching as of December 13, 2017). Please feel free to send me questions or comments on anything. It's really broadened my horizons to be here and learn from all your children!
