Welcome to "Grammar: Exploring Language Basics (Part 3 of 4)" where learners will continue their exciting journey into the world of grammar! In this course, learners will continue with their exploration of the fundamental building blocks of language. Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, they'll delve into the world of irregular past tense verbs, irregular plural nouns, shades of meaning, and paragraph writing. ****Class Structure*** This course follows the "I do, We do, You do" method of instruction to scaffold learning as we are introduced to new grammar concepts. Each lesson will begin with a warm up or review followed by direct instruction in the grammar concept of the day and time for independent practice. Learners will have time throughout class to craft their own sentences and apply what they have learned. ******************************** Unit Descriptions ******************************** Unit 1: Irregular Past Tense Verbs In this unit, learners will build on what they already know about writing in the past tense using regular past tense verbs. They will be introduced to irregular past tense verbs, identify them in mentor texts, and write with them to create their own original story that tells about a favorite memory with friends and/or family. Unit 2: Verbs and Shades of Meaning In this unit, learners will be introduced to the idea that verbs have different shades of meaning. We will explore synonyms of the verbs look, bite, and drink and how the synonyms of these verbs can imply the action taking place differently. (Ex: A glance is a quick look at something while a stare is a long look at something. A sip is a small drink while a gulp is a big drink). We will practice choosing the synonym that most closely matches the meaning we are trying to convey. Unit 3: Irregular Plural Nouns In this unit, learners will build on what they already know about making nouns plural. They will be introduced to irregular plural nouns, identify them in a mentor text, and write with them to create an original story. Unit 4: Paragraph Writing In this unit, learners will explore the structure of a paragraph and learn to create their own. This unit will include multiple opportunities for learners to respond to prompts in paragraph form.
