6-Week Grade 4 Multiplication & Division Curriculum Objective: By the end of six weeks, students will confidently multiply and divide multi-digit numbers, understand the relationship between multiplication and division, solve word problems, and apply these skills in real-world contexts. Week 1: Multiplication as Repeated Addition & Arrays Focus: • Understanding multiplication as repeated addition • Using arrays and equal groups to represent multiplication • Introduction to the commutative property of multiplication Activities: • Skip counting warm-ups • Building arrays with manipulatives (Legos, counters) • Drawing equal groups to model multiplication • Worksheet practice with repeated addition and arrays • Exit ticket: Write a multiplication sentence for an array Week 2: Multiplication Strategies & Fact Families Focus: • Fact families (relating multiplication and division) • Properties of multiplication (commutative, associative, distributive) • Mental math strategies (doubling, breaking apart numbers) Activities: • Fact family triangle activity • Multiplication matching game (match expressions with fact family partners) • Dice game: Roll two numbers, multiply, and find related division facts • Interactive notebook page on properties of multiplication • Exit ticket: Create a fact family using three numbers Week 3: Multiplying 2-Digit by 1-Digit Numbers Focus: • Expanding multiplication beyond basic facts • Using area models and partial products • Introduction to the standard algorithm Activities: • Modeling multiplication using base-ten blocks • Break-apart strategy (expanded form) • Area model multiplication practice • Solve real-world problems (e.g., “A concert hall has 24 rows with 6 seats each. How many seats in total?”) • Exit ticket: Solve 28 × 3 using two different strategies Week 4: Division as Repeated Subtraction & Equal Groups Focus: • Understanding division as the inverse of multiplication • Using equal groups and repeated subtraction to divide • Writing division equations Activities: • Equal groups sorting activity • Using number lines to model division • Group work with real-life division problems • Timed division fact practice • Exit ticket: Draw a model to solve 32 ÷ 4 Week 5: Long Division & Word Problems Focus: • Introduction to long division (1-digit divisor) • Using estimation to check division answers • Multi-step word problems Activities: • Guided long division with place value blocks • Division relay race (students solve steps of a problem in teams) • Solve & explain: How do we check our answers using multiplication? • Word problem stations with real-world applications • Exit ticket: Complete one long division problem and explain how you checked your answer Week 6: Multiplication & Division Challenge Week Focus: • Mixed multiplication & division word problems • Real-world applications • End of Unit Review and Reflection
