Learn to Read: Initial Assessment of Skills for 1:1 Reading Tutoring

In this class we'll complete activities to help us get to know each other. It is my goal to make your learner comfortable in our session. I will work with your learner to assess current levels of reading skills using an appropriate assessment, depending on age and grade level. If your learner is an early reader and needs decoding skill development, I will complete a Core Phonics Screener. This will help to determine where instruction should begin to help develop needed skills. If your learner is an older learner and needs to work on comprehension skills, I will design an instructional plan to determine areas needing support by completing a variety of questions and activities. Then we will work together to design an instructional plan for your learner.

During our tutoring sessions, I will provide explicit, systematic instruction. Our sessions will include structured lessons, games, and activities to reinforce the skill for the lesson. We will read decodable stories within each phonics lesson, and stories of interest to your learner for comprehension lessons. Each lesson will always be structured to your learner's specific needs.
