✨Come and explore rocks, gems, minerals, and crystals together! During our class sessions, we will discuss and observe the student's favorite specimens. Please know that students may bring any rock or specimen they'd like to share with the class.

💎We will discuss and uncover some fascinating items from my collection that I will share with the students. As a member of a local “rockhounds” club with my son for many years, we’ve grown quite a collection of unique specimens and acquired great knowledge. A few items in our collection were once displayed in a local museum and arrived by train to the curator many years ago. My love of minerals and gems started as a child with my rock tumbler. It’s been wonderful taking this journey with my son and learning from the geology and museum curators. I will also upload various coloring pages after select classes.

👉During our time together in class, we will refer to the Mohs hardness scale and talk about the aspects related to their “show and tell specimen.” Students will be led to uncover new concepts related to their specimens and be guided with specific questions to use those critical thinking skills and "dig" deeper.

We will have a basic format to follow for each session:
1.) Welcome and Introductions
2.) New concept or question of the Day: (examples below)
    ▪︎Why do minerals fluoresce?
▪︎How can I “dig” deeper into learning about geology?
▪︎What are minerals, rocks, and gems?
▪︎How does chemistry and the periodic table of elements relate to geology specimens?
▪︎Exploration of various dig sites together.
    ▪︎Physical properties to identify minerals
    ▪︎What is a native mineral?
▪︎How can crystal habit change a mineral?
3.) Introduction to a few unique specimens from my vast collection! (Pyrolusite, Chabazite,
    Heulandite, Apache Tears, Citrine, Calcite,
    Purple Fluorite, and many more...)
*Note: We will see a few new specimens each week as time permits during our class. I
    have hundreds!
4.) Learners will present their specimens if they would like to share. (questions and sharing
     from others will be encouraged)

💥I can’t wait to share the wonderful world of geology with your student. This is a fascinating and vast area of science that leads to discovery and investigation. The students will leave class feeling encouraged and gaining knowledge to continue building their collection should they choose.
Metas de aprendizaje
🔥Students will have the opportunity to share their questions, specimens, and ideas in class as we explore many unique geology topics and research specimens together.
They will be encouraged to guess and help each other with guided questions to discuss and attempt to identify their "rock" specimens.

Lección 1:
Why do minerals fluoresce?
Dive into the reasons why minerals can be fluorescent.
What does this mean?
Is there a reaction taking place to make this occur?
We will collaborate and share our ideas together.
Introduction to the Mohs hardness scale with collection samples to reinforce understanding. * Time for sharing specimens in each session.

Lección 2:
Can crystal habit change around us?
Join me as we uncover the meaning of "crystal habit." Together we will discuss this concept as it relates to the world around us. We will uncover many questions and discover your specimens together. What is an element, and how does this change a particular rock specimen? *Time for sharing in each session.

Lección 3:
What is a native mineral?
Picture a native mineral as nature's jewels, hidden within rocks, waiting to be discovered! What treasures have formed by natural processes and could be part of your collection? We will continue to build our ideas and share "digging" deeper into the field of geology together. * Time for sharing in each session.

Lección 4:
Chemistry and Geology Warm-up!
Rocks and chemistry are like a magical science puzzle! Imagine being a detective and finding out that every rock is made of tiny building blocks called elements. In our final class, you'll learn how elements make up rocks we've explored together. Let's uncover some of your specimens and see the elements. By exploring these elements, we'll unlock the secrets of rocks and discover amazing stories behind them.

As a homeschool mom, rock lover, and member of a local rockhound club with my son for many years, I love to explore the wonderful world of Geology. Each unique specimen that has formed over time brings great fascination and excitement to figure out the where, why, and how it formed.
I would love to uncover and encourage your student to dive deeper into their knowledge of rocks, minerals, crystals, and gems. Being close to the Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems has provided and truly expanded my knowledge in this field.
This is a class to encourage the students to explore their interests and spark curiosity as we are discussing the various topics. No prior knowledge of Geology is required, just the desire to explore and learn together!
