Learners may draw original characters or scenes inspired by the Gerald and Piggie books, including speech bubbles to create their own stories. Additional ideas are to write a summary of one of the Gerald and Piggie stories, including the beginning, middle, and end. Learners may want to create a new adventure or scenario for Gerald and Piggie, using dialogue and simple sentences to mimic the storytelling style of Mo Willems. Another fun activity is to write opinion pieces about the stories, such as explaining a favorite book in the series and supporting the choice with reasons.Informe de progreso

Let's have fun while we practice our reading fluency together! Elephant and Piggie books are my favorite from helping readers become more confident and fluent! They will learn about different punctuation and how our sentences are spoken differently based off of the punctuation. They will practice reading sight words and short sentences to increase their reading ability. Learners will interpret how a character is feeling and give that character a special voice. In this ongoing small group class, we will be introduced to the character of Elephant and Piggie. The learner will be assigned a role of either Gerald the Elephant or Piggie the Pig. I will share my screen so that they have access to the words. Learners do not need the book to enjoy this class! We will read through the book one time to practice reading in sentences and identify unfamiliar words. Then we will do a quick review of words that we might not know how to pronounce or what they mean. We will also talk about the character and how to read dramatically. If there is a phonics skill a learner is struggling with, we will practice that skill so that they become more confident! Learners will practice creating voices for their character, interpret emotions from their character, and pay attention to how different punctuation makes sentences sound different! Finally, we will read through a second time using fun voices and acting the story out! By the end of the class, students will improve their reading fluency, comprehension, and conversational skills while building social-emotional awareness and creative expression through the playful and heartwarming adventures of Gerald and Piggie. Here is a list of the books that we will use in class: Winter/Spring 2025 January 5: I Will Surprise My Friend! January 12: Watch Me Throw the Ball! January 19: Elephants Cannot Dance!
