Experiencia de clase

Would you like for your child to have the opportunity to see what life is like for other children their age in different places around the world? Would you like for your child to have the opportunity to share about their life within a diverse community of learners?

In this ongoing class, children will have the opportunity to connect with other children and discuss different aspects of their lives. Students will practice their conversational skills (including active listening) as well as their presentation skills when they share about their own experiences.

Each class period will focus on a different theme. The students will choose an artifact (item) or photograph related to the theme and bring with it them to class to present in the style of “Show and Tell.”

The themes that each class will focus on are intended to be general in order to keep where students live unknown for safety and privacy reasons. Your child should not share specifics about where he or she lives more closely than a large city that is nearby, or the state, etc. Your child can also keep their responses as general as the country that they live in if that is what you prefer.

At the beginning of each class period, we will have a few minutes to chat and share about our lives since the last class session. We will also discuss topics like the weather where you live, what season it is, etc. This will be similar to a “Circle Time” or “Calendar Time” in a traditional school setting.

Then the teacher will model how to share a response to that day’s theme. Each student will then have the opportunity to show their artifact (or photograph). The teacher will model how to ask polite questions about the artifact in order to deepen the conversation and promote critical thinking skills. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about each artifact. Showing an artifact or picture will be helpful to provide context if the item is unfamiliar to anyone in class. The artifacts can be very simple for example, a soccer ball when discussing sports, or sea shell when discussing local nature.

*Please be sure that the artifact your child chooses to share is appropriate (nothing related to violence, weaponry, etc.) prior to each class period.

I have 9 years public school teaching experience with over 500 students from many different cultural backgrounds. During all nine years, I taught students in both Spanish and English. As someone who has learned a second language (Spanish), I value opportunities to learn about people who are different from me and live differently from me. I look forward to learning more about where your children live in the world.

I have my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I am certified to teach Kindergarten through Fifth Grade general education as well as Spanish and English as a Second Language from Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade. I use my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction to create lessons that are multidisciplinary with higher order thinking skills interwoven throughout.

I am a mother with two young children. I see the value that socialization and interaction with peers bring to our children’s social and emotional well-being. I believe that learning about people who are different from you helps you to develop the empathy that is critical for relating to others.
