1 hora por semana. I will provide a weekly pdf of problems similar to ones we discuss in class. This way students will be able to practice patterns found in class and hopefully teach someone else!Evaluación
Upon request I can provide an informal assessment (written paragraph) of any learner at any time. But there are no formal grades or tests.Calificación

This course focuses on fraction understanding and fraction computation. This course is for students who are prepared to see fractions and think about how they relate to one another and the world around them! We will meet eight times and each class builds on the previous discussion and understanding. Each class will be based on carefully curated problems that lead to questions and understanding about how numbers relate and why answers to problems make sense. We will use physical manipulatives as well as bar models, area models and number lines to make sense of the work we do. Each class will begin with a warmup problem and a quick discussion to establish classroom community expectations. Students will be asked questions and it is hoped that students will explain their thinking so that we can all benefit from patterns that we see. Each daily problem set will build intentionally to allow students to 'see' the patterns and methods that will make the most sense to them. Students will leave each class able to explain standard algorithms but also show alternate ways to find a solution. Daily challenges will involve discussion and seeking as many ways to solve a problem as we decide makes sense. In this course we are expected to make mistakes and build on each other's thinking. We will also agree on steps we can ALWAYS use to find answers to fraction problems that involve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division!
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn to write, describe, and compare fractions.
Students will build understanding of the four basic operations and how to accurately use them with fractions.
Students will use number lines and bar models to represent equivalent fractions.

más de 4 semanasLección 1:
Building Fraction Knowledge
This lesson is about learning the parts of fractions, names of fractions, different ways of seeing fractions and comparing fraction sizes.

Lección 2:
Understanding Fraction Equivalence and Size
This lesson is about learning how to find equivalent fractions and understand how they are similar but not "exactly" the same. We will also learn how to compare fractions as "greater than, less than and equal to."

Lección 3:
Adding and Subtracting with Fractions
This lesson is about learning how to add/subtract fractions with common denominators and when one fraction's denominator can be changed into the second fraction's denominator.

Lección 4:
Adding and Subtracting Fractions - Level II
This lesson is about learning how to add/subtract fractions with uncommon denominators where each denominator needs to be changed in order to create a common denominator (piece size).

Otros detalles
Necesidades de aprendizaje
This class uses manipulatives frequently to aid in comprehension so many students with learning differences generally benefit greatly from this instruction.
Orientación para padres
There will be no scary content in this class.
Requisitos previos
Learners need to understand the four basic operations and recognize grouping such as "what two values makes 10" and "what is the difference between 6 and 2." Students should also be familiar with the idea that a fraction is a part of one.
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Carolina del Norte Certificado de Docencia en Matemáticas
Maestría desde Johns Hopkins University
I have been a middle school math teacher for twenty three years. I have helped thousands of students make the transition from elementary math to middle school math and beyond. I have taught and tutored students from second grade through Trigonometry so I also understand the mindset necessary for continued mathematical success. I have a Masters in Education from Johns Hopkins University.
