In this engaging and hands-on class, students will discover creative and fun ways to solve fractions while connecting them to real-life applications. From dividing up food to exploring musical rhythms and sports statistics, this class shows how fractions are everywhere in our world. Designed for curious and gifted learners aged 8–13, this neurodiverse-friendly course fosters creativity and critical thinking while making math enjoyable and relatable. Class Schedule: • Duration: 45 minutes per session • Frequency: Once a week Week-by-Week Breakdown: Week 1: Introduction to Fractions • Objective: Understand the basics of fractions and their real-life importance. • Activity: Explore fractions through a pizza-making activity, dividing different toppings into fractional parts. Week 2: Fractions in Cooking • Objective: Apply fractions to measure ingredients accurately. • Activity: Follow a simple recipe, like baking cookies or making a smoothie, to practice measuring ingredients in fractional amounts- will be determined by class preference Week 3: Fractions in Shopping • Objective: Learn to compare and calculate discounts using fractions. • Activity: Plan a shopping trip with a budget, calculate fractional discounts on items, and discuss best buys. Week 4: Fractions in Sports • Objective: Understand how fractions are used in sports statistics. • Activity: Analyze a basketball game, calculating shooting percentages and other statistics. Week 5: Fractions in Art • Objective: Use fractions to create and understand patterns and symmetry in art. • Activity: Create a piece of artwork using fractional parts, such as a mosaic or a symmetrical drawing.
