Experiencia de clase

In each session, we will pose a problem and choose some fractions to crochet models of to help with problem solving. While we crochet the fraction models, there will also be sewing-circle-typical social conversation, with icebreaker questions as needed.

Upcoming topics:
Week of September 16: Comparing Unit Fractions
Week of September 23: Equivalent Fractions
Week of September 30: Combining Fractions by Adding
Week of October 7: Comparing Non-Unit Fractions
Week of October 14: Equivalent Fractions
Other topics may also come up when used as steps or to extend the day's problem, depending on the learner group's interests and needs.

Some previous experience with crochet or knitting would be beneficial, but class is suitable for learners of all skill levels, including those who are new to crochet. We will cover some basic crochet techniques, such as the chain stitch, slip stitch, single crochet, and double crochet, as needed during the class. Similarly, learners do not need to have any specific experience with fraction calculations, but any prior knowledge they have may help them be more successful.
Metas de aprendizaje
Learners will crochet in rounds, using chain stitch and single crochet.
Learners will switch between colors.

Otros detalles

Orientación para padres
Learners will need to use age-appropriate functional sharp objects (scissors and possibly yarn needles) to cut yarn and tuck in ends. If desired for safety purposes, nail clippers can be used instead of scissors to cut yarn, and the crochet hook can be used to tuck in ends.
Lista de útiles escolares
Yarn, at least two colors (standard worsted-weight acrylic which usually costs under $5 will be fine -- if the learner is new to crochet, light or bright colors are better than dark colors)
Scissors for yarn (nail clippers will work if the parent wants the learner to be extra safe)
Crochet hook compatible with the yarn (if using the recommended yarn, about a G or H hook -- also under $5)
Stitch markers (if official ones are not available, learners can use paper clips or a different color of yarn) (under $2)
If anyone in the family is or is likely to be a crochet enthusiast, a kit with many sizes of ergonomic hooks and other tools like needles and stitch markers, like this one https://www.amazon.com/WooCrafts-Large-Eye-Ergonomic-Arthritic-Hands-Best/dp/B06XHHJ1TV/ , is worth considering. The larger grip can also be easier for beginners, just like little kids using bigger crayons.
Storage for supplies and completed projects
Optional: yarn needle for tucking in ends (comes in most kits, or available separately, but if you haven't got one, you can use the hook)

Hello mathematicians, puzzlers, and other curious people!

I'm a homeschool graduate, math professor, textile/sewing enthusiast, literary hobbyist, and general curious individual, here to share all of the above with the next generation. Math classes that are helpful and understandable, instead of just trying to figure it out for yourself from a book, are my main focus — I believe deep, confident understanding of math is for everybody.

I'm in US Central Time but flexible as to time zones. If you need a class offered at an international friendly time, just ask!

Want to start class already knowing a classmate? Or, do you just like getting deals? With my Bring-a-Friend discount, you can tell a friend to sign up and tell me who sent them, and you'll both get 25% off (processed manually through the refund system). You can bring more than one friend and get more than one discount — if you bring four friends, you get the class for free!

A few testimonials, in my students' own words:

I needed some help to knock out a 6 week Summer Business Calc class after not doing any math for over 20 years. Avrila worked with my schedule and demonstrated expert level knowledge of the subject matter in every lesson. Whether helping me construct equations from cryptic setups, develop test strategies, or just review the standard limit or calculus rules to complete problems, Avrila always knew what was required and gave me just enough information to figure things out for myself. I can not recommend her highly enough!

She explains things so well and walks you through topics step by step. She is extremely patient and super nice!

Avrila is awesome! She is extremely knowledgeable and flexible with my busy schedule. She explains these concepts in a super simple way making it much easier to understand. She helped me get through the majority of my semester, helping me improve my GPA more than I ever had hoped. I highly recommend her for any of your tutoring needs regarding stats.
