Experiencia de clase

This is a five week course that gives students a basic understanding of fraction computation. 
Week 1
Students will learn fractions that have a common (the same) denominator, can be added together by calculating the numerators and leaving the denominator the same. They will then learn the unit fraction represents the number of pieces the whole has been
divided into. It always has the number 1 in the numerator. Students will learn how to write an addition sentence if a whole was composed of 8 equal parts as example. 1 or 8/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8. Several examples will follow to ensure understanding. Students will also learn how fractions can be regrouped to add them in a different way. 
Week 2
Students will continue adding this week but the focus will be adding mixed numbers with common denominators. To add mixed numbers with common denominators, students will learn to add the fractions then add the whole numbers. Students will also learn how to make sure your answer is in simplest form. Next, students will learn sometimes after you add the mixed numbers, the fraction is improper. When this occurs, you must rename the improper fraction as a mixed number and add it to the whole number. Several example problems will be given to ensure understanding. 
Week 3
Students will learn subtracting fractions with a common denominator is similar to when we added fractions with a common denominator. The denominator indicates the number of parts of the whole. If the fractions have a common denominator, they are the same "size" so we can subtract the numerators (or number of parts). We are taking away parts instead of adding more. Students will be given several examples, including word format to ensure understanding of subtraction.  An example, Joel made a batch of fresh cookies with 5/6 of a pound of butter and 1/6 of a pound of sugar. How much more butter than sugar was used?
Week 4 
Students will learn subtracting mixed numbers with common denominators. To subtract mixed numbers with common
denominators, subtract the fractions then subtract the whole numbers. Students will also learn how to make sure their answer are in simplest form. Students will also learn sometimes it may be necessary to regroup in order to subtract. For example, 7 1/5 - 4 3/5 we can not subtract numerators 1 - 3, so we need to regroup. The 7 is regrouped into 6 5/5, and then added to the 1/5. The problem then becomes 6 6/5 - 4 3/5. Several examples will be given to ensure understanding. 
Week 5
During the final week of this class, students will be multiplying fractions and whole numbers. To multiply fractions with whole numbers, write the whole number as a fraction (over 1) then multiply the two fractions. Students will also be sure to make their final  answer in simplest form. Students will learn to multiply the numerators first. An example would be 10 x 4/9. The problem would be 10/1 x 4/9. Students will learn the answer is 40/9, but in simplest form the final answer becomes a mixed number. Several examples will be given to ensure student understanding.
