Experiencia de clase

One of the most important skills in forensic science is the ability to observe, interpret and report observations clearly and accurately. In this class, we will use and hopefully improve our understanding of our observation skills, and how they are used in forensic science.

Here is a tentative outline for the class:
2-5 minutes: Introduction to the class, student expectations, and each other.
5-7 minutes: Engage - Students engage their own observation skills by observing a photo for a period of time and then answering questions about the photo afterward.
10-15 minutes: Explore - We will have a lecture style lesson about observation, eye witness accounts, and how to be a good observer.
5-7 minutes: Explain - Students will collaborate to explain factors that affect observations and eyewitness accounts.
3-5 minutes: Extend - In each of my Forensic Science Series classes, we will have a short section titled "Careers in Forensics" in which we will examine a real-world career related to the forensic science topic we are exploring. This class highlights Paul Ekman facial analysis and deception expert.
10-15 minutes: Evaluate - Students will have a second opportunity to practice their observation skills, collaborate and discuss the importance of accurate eyewitness accounts and play a game to review and assess their understanding.

This class will be taught using a NearPod lesson. If your student will be using a tablet or phone, they will need to download the free NearPod app, which can be found in the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. I will be posting a link to the NearPod website and a code into the chat box when class starts and students using a computer will be able to access the lesson via the link or by going to the NearPod website and entering in the code.
Metas de aprendizaje
By the end of this lesson students will be able to...

-explain how the brain processes information from the senses
-relate observation skills to their use in forensic science
-practice and improve their own observation skills
-discuss the importance of accurate eyewitness accounts

Welcome!

I'm Amy Davis (she/her) and I've been teaching on Outschool since 2020. My primary focus is on semester long high school science classes. My teaching style is to try to create a positive, low-stress environment with plenty of opportunity for student interaction without forcing or making anyone uncomfortable. I use Nearpod for interactive lessons and I provide a Google Slides digital notebook to all students, which includes handouts for each weekly lesson, and places for students to keep track of grades, notes, and resources.
I recognize that different families have different ways of keeping (or not keeping) grades, as well as different local regulations about classes and grades, so all graded quizzes and exams outside of class are completely optional.

A Little Background About Me:
I have a bachelor's of science degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics, and a master's of science degree in secondary education with a minor in chemistry. I also currently teach adult education classes at my local community college. I have been a certified 8-12 science teacher in Texas since 2012, spending 5 years teaching in public school, 3 years teaching at a homeschool co-op and rest of the time teaching online and at the community college. I have taught chemistry, biology, earth science, life science, forensic science, integrated physics and chemistry in grades 8-12.

I enjoy hanging out with and homeschooling my two teenagers, spending time outside in my native plant wildlife garden, trying all kinds of new things, and relaxing with my three dogs.

If you have any further questions, please send me a message. I would love to hear from you.
