This course continues the forensic science journey into the field as well as the lab. We will begin with an examination of environmental forensic science, including disciplines such as forensic entomology (insects), forensic botany (plants), forensic palynology (pollen), forensic geology (soils), forensic meteorology, and dendrology. We will also look at environmental chemistry in a forensic setting, using chemical and oil spill investigations as case studies.

After covering these areas, we will look at the unique handling of outdoor crime scenes. How are they preserved? What sorts of evidence might we look for and what might we not find? Students will examine ways to measure, collect, and protect evidence in a variety of conditions.

The final section of the course involves a mock crime scene that includes the types of evidence we discuss in this class. Students receive sets of documents with a variety of evidence, and we discuss it in multiple sessions in order to solve our crime.
