This course continues the forensic science journey into the field as well as the lab. We will begin with an examination of environmental forensic science, including disciplines such as forensic entomology (insects), forensic botany (plants), forensic palynology (pollen), forensic geology (soils), forensic meteorology, and dendrology. Week 1Lesson 1Shoe EvidenceDiscussion of shoe evidence, including the difference between prints and impressions, height and weight predictions, wear patterns, analysis of shoe impression images, gait patterns, and case studies (shoes in the OJ Simpson case and the Zodiac).Week 2Lesson 2Outdoor Crime ScenesOverview of the unique elements of an outdoor crime scene, the actions of investigators that differ from indoor scenes, unique challenges with outdoor scenes, and preservation of specific types of evidence.Week 3Lesson 3Forensic GeologyDiscussion of the ways in which geology can help solve a crime. We will discuss soil classification, an Australian experiment involving the downward movement of blood in soil, and a case study--the John Bruce Dodson case.Week 4Lesson 4Case Study - The Somerton ManFull session discussion of the unsolved Australian case known as the Somerton Man.Week 5Lesson 5Environmental Forensic SciencesWe will focus on Forensic Palynology (pollen) and Tree Ring Analysis in a forensic setting. Numerous brief case studies will be discussed.Week 6Lesson 6Hair Evidence and Oil FingerprintingDiscussion of the parts of hair, different scale patterns, chemical testing of hair, differences in hair morphology in different species, and the chemical analysis of oil samples from spill sites.Week 7Lesson 7Case Studies and mock crime prepWe will cover several case studies briefly and then move into a discussion of mock scenes and how to approach them.Week 8Lesson 8Mock Scene 1Students will get an overview of the case and the first bath of evidence. They will be able to ask questions and request additional information.Week 9Lesson 9Mock Scene 2Students will receive the second batch of evidence. We will begin to discuss theories and suspects.Week 10Lesson 10Mock Scene 3Students will receive any final details and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of multiple theories. We will end up solving the case in this session.
I have a passion for teaching, and forensic science has been an area of specialization for me for 20 years. I have a law degree from the University of Michigan, as well as graduate studies in Forensic Science. I have taught Forensic Science at colleges, schools, for homeschool groups, and more. I strive to engage kids in this fascinating topic and make them feel comfortable in this online setting.
