Class Overview: Food for Thought

Welcome to Food for Thought, a 10 week long exploration of the fascinating history of food and its profound relationship with humanity. Led by Teacher Autumn, this immersive course offers a comprehensive journey from the dawn of civilization to the forefront of food technology, blending captivating historical insights with hands-on culinary experiences.

What will be taught?
In Food for Thought, students will delve deep into the evolution of food culture, tracing its origins from nomadic foraging to the cutting-edge innovations of lab-grown meat. Throughout the course, students will examine the dynamic interplay between food and society, exploring how culinary practices have shaped human civilization and vice versa.

Topics Covered:
The course spans 10 weeks, each focusing on a distinct era or theme in the history of food. Students will explore topics such as:

~Nomadic Foraging and Hunting
~Ancient Culinary Traditions
~Medieval Feasting and Farming
~Spice Routes and Global Trade
~Colonialism and Culinary Exchange
~Industrial Revolution and Food Production
~Urbanization and Street Food
~World Wars and Rationing

Class Structure:
Each week, students will engage in a dynamic blend of history lessons, cooking demonstrations, discussions, and quizzes. The class is structured as follows:

Introduction and Historical Context: Teacher Autumn will provide an overview of the week's topic, setting the stage with historical context and key insights.

Cooking Demonstration: Students will have the option to practice cooking a recipe inspired by the week's lesson under the guidance of Teacher Autumn.

Discussion and Reflection: Students are encouraged to sharing insights, questions, and reflections on the week's topic in our class chat. 

Quiz and Feedback: To reinforce learning, students will complete a short quiz to gauge their understanding of the material. 

Recipe Sharing and Community Interaction: Students are encouraged to share their cooking experiences, photos, and feedback in the class chat.

Teacher Autumn employs a multifaceted approach to teaching, incorporating lectures, cooking demonstrations, discussions, and interactive activities to cater to diverse learning styles.  Embark on a voyage through time, tracing the origins of food from nomadic foraging and hunting to the dawn of agriculture. 
Lección 2:
Ancient Civilizations
 Dive into the culinary traditions of ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, uncovering their agricultural innovations and cultural practices. 
Lección 3:
Medieval Feasting
 Experience the lavish banquets and agricultural advancements of medieval Europe, from feudal feasts to peasant farming. 
Lección 4:
Global Trade Routes
 Follow the spice routes and global trade networks that shaped culinary landscapes and cultural exchange.

Safety Precautions: When participating in cooking activities, it's important to prioritize safety. Remember to: Follow proper food safety guidelines to prevent foodborne illnesses. Exercise caution when handling knives and other sharp kitchen tools. Use oven mitts or potholders when handling hot cookware to prevent burns. Be aware of common allergens in recipes and consider any dietary restrictions or allergies. Use kitchen equipment and appliances safely and as intended. Provide supervision for younger learners to ensure their safety while cooking. By prioritizing safety precautions, we can enjoy the culinary aspect of the class while minimizing risks of accidents or injuries. This topic is vast and different viewpoints will be presented. If at any time your learner feels uncomfortable with the information being presented, please reach out to Teacher Autumn so she can offer alternative materials.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students will have the opportunity to cook and research food from all around the world. This is up to each student on the dish they pick to make. Dishes can be made with items found in a typical home or they might with to try a new to them dish.       Please note that Teacher autumn has left this up to each student to choose so that all students are welcome, and no one feels pressure to cook or eat something that they are not familiar with. 

Teacher Autumn is available to offer suggestions, but the final dish/ recipe is up to each individual student.

Her background in educating others, combined with her hands-on experience in homeschooling, equips her with valuable insights and a nurturing approach to teaching.
