Experiencia de clase

Welcome! Thank you for your interest in this class! After reading the course description please let me know if you have any questions!
In this class students will get an introduction to American Sign Language. I will post a new video each week. Each video will cover new signs for the weeks topic and the requirements for the students response video. Students will be able to post a response video each week and I will provide feedback on their video and be involved with any discussion posts. There is no time requirement for the video posts and there are no live meetings in this course. When a student posts in discussion feed they have the option to use video or text. Each week a new bonus homework assignment and a student interaction video will be available for students who want to get the most out of this flex course. I will be available for questions and feedback through the classroom and direct messages. This class is great for students who are unavailable for a live meeting. Come join us in a fun, low pressure environment and learn ASL! No prior ASL experiences needed for this class. In this class all assignments/videos are optional. Students can work at their own pace within the 5 weeks. You can make this class as formal or informal as you wish!

Week 1: Alphabet. For this lesson I will post a video teaching how to sign each letter and how to fingerspell each students name. After watching the video students will then create a video of themselves signing the alphabet and the phrase "My name is _____." I will also post a handout of the alphabet for students to use when making their video. There will be a bonus homework assignment and discussion question the students are welcome to take part in.

Week 2: Numbers 1-100. I will post a videos showing how to sign numbers 1-100. I will also provide a handout of the ASL numbers to help students when they are creating their video post. After watching the video students will need to make a video of themselves showing their comprehension of number signs. The weekly discussion question and bonus homework assignments will be available throughout the week for student involvement.

Week 3: Colors, beginner signs and phrases. For this weeks lesson, I post a video showing ASL colors, basic signs and phrases such as "I am learning ASL," yes, no, friend etc. When students feel like they have a good understanding of the lesson they are welcome to post a video showing what they have learned from this weeks video. Also students are welcome to answer the bonus questions and student interaction questions if they wish.

Week 4: Animal signs. This weeks lesson will be all about animals! A new video will be posted where animal ASL signs like dog, cat, horse, bird, frog and fish will be taught! When students are ready they can post a video of them showing what they have learned. Bonus questions and a student interaction question will be available for student participation.

Week 5: Family signs. In the final week of class we will focus on family signs. Students will learn father, mother, daughter, son, nephew, niece, brother, sister, kid, children/child, grandmother, grandfather, grandparent, cousins, aunt, uncle, person, people, and family. The students can post a video when they feel like they have good understanding of the lesson. Just as weeks before, a bonus homework assignment will be available for student involvement.

I love American Sign Language and I enjoy teaching this beautiful language. I have taken 4 years of formal ASL classes. I have also taught middle school ASL in a traditional classroom setting. I was also a 1st grade teacher for a few years! I also enjoy signing songs in ASL for different events. I have been teaching on Outschool for a year and have taught over 500 students!
When a hearing person teaches ASL they are not just about teaching individual signs but rather teaching the whole package of ASL and Deaf culture. ASL is not just a signed version of English. It is made up of facial expressions, body language, non verbal signs, grammar and Deaf culture. The culture and community is so rich with history and values that should be taught right alongside the grammar and signs of ASL. When learning and teaching ASL we all need to honor the language and culture by learning every aspect.
