This class is designed to help students organize their ideas and focus their attention on topics within a five paragraph essay. ***This writing class provides guidance to students who already know the basics of setting up a five paragraph essay.*** *** If your learner needs more detailed instruction on how to set up a five paragraph essay, with a strong focus on the basics, please look into my Guided Five Paragraph Essay Writing Class. That would be a perfect start to essay writing and then the student can progress into this ongoing class.*** The teacher will provide whole group instruction and afterwards students are expected to begin working on their essays independently throughout the week. Students are able to choose the type of essay they would like to work on. Most students choose the essay that they know they need the most guidance completing. They are also able to choose their own topic to focus on. Topic ideas are provided throughout the lesson for students who are unsure about what to write about. The teacher is available during the week to answer questions and help with editing suggestions. In this class, we will begin our prewriting practice by using a graphic organizer in order to create a well-organized, five paragraph essay. Students will learn about eleven types of essays and be able to complete a different type of essay each week. As we all know, every student’s ability and schoolwork schedule determine how much an individual can produce every week. Therefore, it is important for you to help your learner set completion goals. For example, some students are able to write two essays a week. Others write one essay a week, and some are able to produce one essay every 2 to 3 weeks. As a teacher, I am available to help guide your learner by offering recommendations for improvement, as well as helping them with the grammatical aspects of writing. Students are encouraged to share their work at any point during the week so that they may receive feedback and continue revising their work. Google Docs or Apache OpenOffice can be used in order to turn in the final copy of the essay. Class structure: --------------------- 1. Whole group activity: - structure of a five paragraph essay - guided discussion - analysis of different essay types - essay topics - brainstorming time for upcoming essay - review structure a five paragraph essay 2. Homework: - organizing/writing/rewriting/ final copies - teacher will provide feedback on grammar, organization, and content of the essay Please note that I do not share video recordings of the lessons.

Hello, my name is Natalie Sydor. I have been an English Language Arts and Reading Teacher for over 25 years. I have taught ELA and Reading to students from the ages of 5 - 18. My students have been native English speakers as well as English language learners. My lessons have focused on phonics, grammar, speaking skills, writing skills, comprehension, literary work analysis, and research. I have taught in the mainstream classrooms and have also worked in small group and tutoring settings teaching: phonics, ESL, Guided Reading, Spanish, Ukrainian, English language skills and test taking skills.
My responsibilities have included monitoring students' progress from all academic abilities. I understand that everyone is unique. Some students need guided attention and support to thrive, while others need minimal guidance and prefer a more independent environment to succeed. I have helped my students to progress to their academic goals and have helped them learn to strive for continued improvement. I guided my youngest son through his Home School Education. My goal is to help motivate every student to work hard and achieve their highest academic potential!
I have a Bachelor's Degree in English/Education from Loyola University (Chicago, Illinois), as well as ESL and Bilingual Certifications from Concordia University (Chicago, Illinois). My Master's Degree is in Education and Teacher Leadership from St. Xavier University (Chicago, Illinois). I have also completed 45 graduate credit hours at Colorado State University in English, Reading, and Multicultural Education. My continued attendance at seminars contributes to my own personal and professional growth. I currently work as an Academic Advisor at a University.
I love to spend time with my family, especially with my three grown children and their families. I like to cook and bake (gluten free and allergy friendly meals), take walks, and explore nature. I also read a lot! That’s definitely a super important part of my life. I spend time working in our native plant garden, I take care of our organic vegetable gardens, raise Monarch butterflies in the summer, and go on walks with my dog Juniper.
I am proud to have the opportunity to teach on the Outschool platform and to have the possibility to work with your learner. Please consider joining my classroom soon!
