PLEASE PRINT OUT MATERIALS IN FILES PRIOR TO COMING TO CLASS! During the two classes, students will have fun learning what an idiom is by watching videos, playing games, listening to examples, and trying to figure out what the non-literal meaning is of common idiom phrases . They will create an All About Me Idiom page. During Day 1: 1. Students will learn the definition of an idiom. “Idioms are groups of words that really don’t mean what they say (literal meaning). Idioms have a completely different meaning than the individual words (non-literal meaning). 2. I will screen share, in class, the YouTube video “Award Winning Figurative Language Idiom” which will explain what an Idiom is in more detail. 3. We will play "Guess My Idiom's Meaning?" using a power point that depicts illustrations of common idioms. Students will try to figure out the non-literal meaning of an idiom by using picture clues. 4. Students will create an All About Me Idiom page using common idioms, and then share with the class. During Day 2: 1. We will review what an Idiom is. 2. I will screen share, in class, the YouTube video Kinder Studios "Story Time, More Parts" by Tedd Arnold. This story is a very funny book of idioms that children love. 3. We will discuss and figure out the non-literal meanings of the different Idioms from the story using context clues. 4. Students will do a cut and paste idiom match activity from the story, "More Parts". 5. Students will pick their favorite idiom from the story, illustrate it, and write a sentence using the idiom. They will then share their page in class.
