Welcome to 5th grade science!

5th grade science is broken into four quarters. This curriculum is packed full of fun facts, hands-on activities, and interactive learning. I believe that to understand a concept students, and grown-ups, need to jump in and experience it! Class will start with a brief presentation, game, or video. We will learn a little about the topic of the week and then dive into our activity. After class there will be a post-activity that is optional. This may include another hands-on experiment/activity, worksheet, or videos. I encourage students to share stories or show artifacts that have to do with the topic. This is optional, but always a fun way for students to be interactive!

**Students do not need to take quarters in order**

Week one-Earth's Systems: Introduction to geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere with a focus on water quality
Week two-Earth's Systems: Topographical maps
Week three-Engineering Practices: Building a bridge engineering challenge
Week four-Ecosystems: Energy, Dynamics, and Interactions- Review of animal lifecycles, habitats, and behavior in different ecosystems
Week five-Ecosystems: Energy, Dynamics, and Interactions- The energy in food chains and food webs dioramas
Week six-Ecosystems: Energy, Dynamics, and Interactions- Turning food into matter and energy...human style!
Week seven-Earth and Human Activity- Natural resources in ecosystems
Week eight- Matter and Its Interaction- Physical and chemical changes experiment
Week nine- Energy- Making mixtures and energy transformation
Week ten- Energy- Magnetic forces compass construction

Materials for each class will be posted in the classroom.

Please reach out if there is another date and time that would work better for your student's schedule.

**Please note- if class does not meet the minimum number of learners, the class date will begin 1-2 weeks later to allow for more enrollments.

Hi! My name is Kristi and I am so happy you ventured over to my science learning lab!

My goal is for students to have fun, maybe get messy, and gain a love for science! My teaching style is interactive and hands-on as I try to bring science to life. My classes work well for the kinesthetic learner.
You will find that most of my classes have a hands-on component to complement the learning experience and my presentations are very visual.

I do my very best to keep prices lower than average as I understand how quickly classes add up for parents. Keeping the prices lower also helps parents as there are material lists for experiments and activities. However, almost every class that I have has a coupon! Please reach out if you need assistance.

When I am not teaching I love to spend time with my daughter outside, gardening, raising chicks, and learning new skills. My goal is to combine some of my hobbies while teaching.

I have been teaching environmental science to students in pre-k through 12th grade for over 12 years. I have taught in various settings including outdoors, in classrooms, and online. I currently run my own business developing and delivering science lessons and custom curriculums to students in school settings, early learning centers, scouts, libraries, and more! I received my B.A.s in Environmental Science and Sociology in 2016 and my M.S. in Resilient and Sustainable Communities in 2019.
