In this class, we will discuss feminism, gender, and equality by analyzing the characters in comic book movies. Specifically, our we will focus on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Is Black Widow a feminist hero? Does Gamora's fate undermine the franchise's attempts to promote gender equity? How does Captain Marvel compare to other feminist icon superheroes? What can we learn from Pepper Potts and the women of Black Panther?

These are all question we will discuss, and much more!

Week 1: Intro to Feminist Theory
Let's talk about some key feminist theories that can be applied to the MCU. If students have taken my other feminism classes, this week will have a little bit of overlap, but the way that we apply these theories is different from franchise to franchise, so it's still a great discussion! Theories/topics include: agency, "Women in Refrigerators," the Bechdel Test, and consent.

Week 2:
Let's look at the complex role of Black Widow in the Avengers movies. Who is she, and what can we learn from her? How does her role change from movie to movie? What happens if women's roles are primarily about motivating male characters?

Week 3:
What makes a compelling feminist love story? Is Gamora a feminist? What makes a "strong female character" and is Gamora strong? We'll also talk about Mantis and Nebula in this series.

Week 4: The Superheroine of the Future
Audiences waited years for Captain Marvel to appear! How does consent play a role in Captain Marvel's life? How does she change superheroes? What about the incredible women of Wakanda? And what should the MCU do in the future with their characters?

Please see Parental Guidance Information below to understand some more information about my approach to feminism. Additionally, students will benefit from having seen most of the MCU movies movies.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn several feminist theories and understand how to apply them to the texts.

Orientación para padres
I teach from an intersectional feminist perspective, which means that I view gender as just ONE aspect of the world where equality has not yet been attained. We may address additional areas of social injustice, including racism, classism, ableism, and more. I also teach from a non-binary perspective. Although I use gendered language including "boys" and "girls," I also use language like "all genders" and avoid binary language. Transgender and non-binary children should feel welcome in this course, and we will do our best to use gender-inclusive language.
