Throughout history, spies have played important roles in gathering intelligence and infiltrating operations. The American Civil War was no exception. This class will look at several women who engaged in various activities to provide military information to the opposing side during the war. Both Union and Confederate spies will be discussed including Harriet Tubman, Belle Boyd, Rose O'Neal Greenhow and Pauline Cushman. This class will use Google slides, discussion, pictures and primary sources to understand the lives of these ladies and the methods they used as spies. Learners will have the opportunity to understand how women played a role during the American Civil War as well as ways intelligence was covertly transferred across enemy lines. As a final review the second week, learners will complete a teacher created scavenger hunt with the information that was covered during the class. Bring some paper to write on, a pencil, and an open mind to learning history! No prior knowledge is required. Week 1: Spying Techniques and Union Spies During the first class, we will understand methods of spying and learn about a few notable women that engaged in espionage for the Union during the war. Week 2: Confederate Spies and Review Scavenger Hunt During the second class, we will turn our attention to the Confederate spies and how these women served to gain and pass intelligence in support the Confederacy.
