Experiencia de clase

Hi There! I'm Lorin. I am a passionate and patient teacher with the goal of making every learner feel safe, seen and heard. I went thru a shy phase when I was young and understand first hand how feeling supported and encouraged by others is vital for developing self-confidence. I have taught over 6000 lessons online in the past 4 years. I am reading specialist and also teach a kindergarten reading and writing workshop here on Outschool.

My Teaching Style:

My goal as a teacher is to make each student feel relaxed, seen and appreciated for their unique abilities and expressions. I believe in pro-actively praising the positive behaviors I see and establishing well communicated boundaries that require respectful and kind communication from all. I have a bachelors degree in Sociology and have worked four years as a crisis counselor and six as a mentor to at-risk children. I bring these skill sets and experiences to each session and it is an invaluable asset in helping me connect with learners, develop their social skills, understand where they are at developmentally, and creating a fun and safe learning space.

I consider it a privilege to work with children and believe that clear communication, both in the class room and with parents, is one of the essential keys for success. I will send individual updates for each student after each session and welcome your questions or feedback that may help me become an even stronger educator.

CLASS STRUCTURE:

We will have a structured check-in at the beginning of each class where students identify how they are feeling by circling the emoji that best matches how they feel. Students will also share one " Glimmer moment" from their day or past week. This could be a favorite moment they shared with friends or family, a good grade or achievement they are proud of. This is designed to break the ice and gives each child a mini speaking platform right from the start. Sharing a glimmer moment will be encouraged but optional with the hope that shy students will gradually build up their confidence to share after listening to their peers safely share. Learners will be guided in conversation with various questions and prompts while viewing slides and videos that have been pre-selected for each session. A colorful photo of a bird might generate conversation about favorite moments with their pets, experiences they have had at the zoo or interacting with animals in the wild. Or perhaps conversation about animals they love learning about and hope to see in the future. At least three high frequency words will be reviewed during each session. Learners will
be reminded that high frequency words are common words that can sometimes be tricky to read. We will view the word in a sentence, count out the number of letter and sounds. Finally, we will blend the sounds together and practice reading and saying the word out loud together.

It is my hope that the Favorite Things Social Club will become a favorite part of your learners week. A place where they can grow in their self-awareness, self-confidence, conversation skills and their empathy and appreciation for both their peers, animals and the planet. We will conclude each session by allowing students to share what their goal is for the upcoming week. This is designed to help learners understand that we are all working on something. It also allows learners to support one another if, in following weeks, a peer shares that their glimmer moment was accomplishing one of their previously shared goals.

TOPICS:

Each week there will be two pre-selected topics and a third one that the class will discuss and unanimously choose

Pre-selected topics include the following:
