This class will use the documentary Farmland to learn different aspects of agriculture. Farmland follows six farmers in different regions and experiences. These include a big Georgia poultry farm, Texas cattle ranch, Minnesota swine farm, irrigated Nebraska corn/soybean farm, big California vegetable farm and a small Pennsylvania organic grower. The students will learn farming methods, risks, animal welfare, and how farmers supply safe and nutritious foods for the world. The students will watch the movie Farmland and will be able to discuss the different concepts covered. I will provide a link to the documentary to view online. Week 1: Animal Welfare The class will learn about the care of livestock and learn about the government's role in the industry. This week we will discuss vocabulary centered around animals such as ethics, animal welfare and animal rights. I will provide a lesson about the Animal Welfare Act and introduce the laws about agricultural animals hosted on YouTube. The students will play a trivia game with ag facts to show what they learned and what they already knew. The whole class will also interact with each other by discussing and creating discussion questions. Week 2: Farm Risk The class will learn about risks on a farm and everyday life. The risk discussed are production, marketing, financial, legal and human. Different risk factors we will discuss are weather, commodity, insurance, and technology. I will provide a lesson on farming risk hosted on YouTube. The students will interact with each other by sharing ideas of the risks that might happen on their own farm either now or the future. Week 3: Farm Size The class will compare and contrast large versus small farms. We will also discuss how farmers can feed a growing population. I will provide a history lesson on how farms have changed through the years, discuss acres on a farm and what the future holds for farming. The students will interact by discussing what food they would grow on a farm or a garden. Each student will decide which one has the bigger benefit to farming (small or large scale farm) and provide their thoughts on the topic with each other. Week 4: GMOs and Organic Agriculture The class will understand genetically engineered crops and compare different farming practices. The students will learn vocabulary centered around engineering and technology. I will provide a video lesson hosted on YouTube about GMOs and the benefits and what organic farmers are allowed to do. The students will debate and give reasons to support their side of the GMO dilemma. The class will be given different scenarios and the pros/cons using their new knowledge. No farming background is needed for this class. Everyone is welcomed to join and share their own point of view. The point of view of this class will be coming from the farmers point of view and we will talk about the misconceptions about farming. I will post mini lessons and assignments every Monday and the assignments will be due on Friday. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday posts will be used as discussion questions and activities to gain further knowledge. All interaction will be in the Outschool classroom. I will also use Kahoot for trivia questions and games. I will provide the challenge link when it is time to complete the quiz. Google forms will be used for quizzes to assess the learners knowledge. This course is scheduled in flex time for your convenience. Flex class means there will be no live meetings. The work is asynchronous and all activities will take place in the classroom portal not in zoom. The course is great for busy families. The student may access the materials at anytime during the course. The teacher will be available for 1 on 1 or group meetings upon request and will answer emails try to answer within 24 hours.

There will be some sensitive topics discussed such as GMOs, animal welfare, organic farming, and more listed in the description. There are also some links I will put in the classroom that may be sensitive to some students. For example, animal laws about hurting animals. ** In the documentary, there is a minute in the video it shows some cruelty to animals. The farmers in the documentary discuss that is not how most farmers treat and how animals should not be treated. I will put the times if you want to skip over that part.
I understand everyone has their own points of view. I welcome all points of view in the classroom and we will use the different opinions as research topics. In my other agricultural classes, I have had students that choose to be vegans. I enjoy hearing their reasons and they teach me just as much as I teach them. I do not put anyones' lifestyle choices down and do not expect it from anyone else in the classroom. This should be a safe place to discuss different opinions. If someone has a different opinion then we will discuss it in a civil way and find research article supporting our opinion.
Addressing misconceptions especially about the ag industry is a process. We are presented with information everyday through lots of different sources. We must determine if the information is valid or has some bias. During the first week, I will give the students a credibility checklist and make a mini lesson about the checklist. This will help to determine if the information is credible or bias. Some items on the checklist include what is the organizations purpose, is it based on facts or opinions, and are there references to other sources. This checklist can be used for any of my resources I use so the students can make up their own minds about agriculture and the different topics discussed.
*There is some religion mentioned in the classroom. Also, one farmer talks about losing his dad to cancer. So that may be hard for some students.

Licenciatura en Educación desde Northwest Missouri State University
I was raised on a farm where we raised cattle for beef and horses. I currently live on a farm with my own family raising horses and cattle. We treat all of our animals with respect and learn all the government regulations surrounding animal welfare.
When I was younger my dad taught me how to watch the futures market for cattle and crops. Now, I take care of all our risks on the farm. I have taken classes all through my 4-H and college years on how to minimize risks on the farm. I have continued to take workshops to learn current ways to minimize the risks on the farm. My dad also harvest corn and soybeans. We research every year what seeds to plant and how to take care of the crops for maximum yield. We do not have an organic farm but have researched what it takes to be organic using the resources from our Kansas State extension office.
My family owns a small farm but large farms have their advantages. During week 3, I will discuss my own experiences on our farm size and involve the students by discussing their own experiences. I have researched the history of farming and how it has changed through hundreds of years. From horses and plows to the drones and large tractors we use today. I have helped many farmers harvest using the many types of equipment needed.
I have learned about farming methods through my experiences growing up on a farm, 4-H workshops, college classes for my ag education minor, working with Iowa State and Kansas State extension offices, completing workshops to learn more how to run my own farm, and working with neighborhood farmers. I have used my knowledge to teach younger learners through 4-H programs and workshops. There is a lot of misinformation out there from anti farming videos and articles. The documentary Farmland helps put a face to the farmers that are dedicated to feed the world like my family. We use current research for farming methods and follow all the government regulations.
