Students are keenly aware of their peer's reactions to their work. They know when everyone is listening breathlessly. As they participate in the workshop they naturally want to read something other students will enjoy, so they naturally begin pushing themselves to write better work using the tools presented by the instructor in exercises. By the end of the workshop, their writing has reached a more sophisticated and challenging level.Experiencia de clase

This class will involve creating a city that exists on another planet or in an alternative universe. You will get to people your section of this remarkable city with interesting characters, unusual objects, and strange events. The process: Step 1: Each week students will receive a writing exercise that relates to a flavor of science fiction and fantasy. Step 2: When the 20 minute writing time is over, students will be given the option to read their work out loud to each other. Step 3: Since we're discussing first drafts and haven't had a chance to edit it yet, the whole class will only comment on what we like and remember about the writing. Themes for the exercises will be drawn from books that involve science fiction & fantasy or the uncanny. This is a good class for students who have already taken a fiction writing course or are naturally strong writers--or both, but it's not necessary. Some students who are into D&D or role playing will also love this class. Week #1: Brainstorming: creating characters, names, places, and unusual or magical items and festivals to use in our stories. Week #2: The Inciting Incident: How to start a story that will hook readers. Week #3: Character Descriptions: Quickly creating interesting characters Week #4: Packing Up For the Trip: What are Backstory & Info Dumps? Week #5: Point of View: 4 things to try that will instantly create deep point of view for your main character Week #6: Setting: How you can make trees climb hillsides and other cool settings Week #7: Mood: Learn how to create a certain feeling or tone to your world and the people in it. Week #8: World building 101: How to create an exciting world through action Week #9: The Mountain: How to build escalating action in a story Week #10: The Net: How to build emotion in a story Week #11: The Writing of Wrongs: Journeys and Quests--Exploring types of plots used in science fiction & fantasy Week #12: The All Is Lost Moment: how to keep your story going and going and going. Otros detalles
Requisitos previos
This class is for students who have at least some ability to write a paragraph at a time and who have the potential to sit and focus for twenty minutes at a time. Students must be able to be respectful and follow instructions.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students should have access to writing paper and pen for each workshop class. We want to put our inner critic away--it's too easy to erase words on the computer. Tip: have a folder on hand so you can put stories from the workshop together at the end of each day.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
This workshop is for kids who write like teens and find fun in a creative challenge. There's so much to write about--new characters, new creatures, new adventures--your tweener won't want to stop even after writing time is over. The collaborative world building element of creating their own city creates a bond between students that they won't forget.
