In this class the learner will recount what has happened in the second half of the book in both the second and third sections. We will discuss the character Faber, his “cowardice”, his invention and his intervention in Montag’s life. We will examine the differences between Faber and Beatty; both have literary knowledge but treat literature and Montag differently. We will discuss the issues raised by Mildred’s friends coming around for the evening, looking at their vapid and violent speech and their cultural norms. We will look at themes of searching for truth, distractions, the man made world v the spiritual and the role of families. We will discuss conformity and the avoidance of conflict, looking at Faber, Mildred and Montag as examples. We will discuss the differences between socialising online and socialising in person. We will look at how fire has changed its meaning for Montag in the last section and how Montag becomes the star of a TV show after working hard to pay for Mildred’s TV screen walls.
