Factoring quadratics (factorisation) is one of the most difficult topics in Algebra 1, and it is also important in Algebra 2. Students join this class to learn the steps, to get a refresher, and to keep their factoring skills sharp as they move through Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2.

Each week is independent from the others, so jump in at any time.

The method I teach for factoring in this class is a method that students will be able to continue using throughout high school. Factoring is challenging enough by itself; I don't believe in teaching one method for Algebra 1 and then another method for Algebra 2. They will not have to learn a new method when they get to Algebra 2!

Each session will follow the same general process: I'll work through examples with learners using the provided handout which details the solving process, allowing time for questions and for learner thinking time. There will be time for learner questions, through the chat or verbally. At the end of each session, I'll do one "challenge problem."

The challenge problems will rotate through the following (a different one each week):
factor and solve, factoring perfect square trinomials, factoring with two variables, factoring the difference of two squares.

I use scaffolded instruction, which simply means that I provide more support at the beginning and gradually learners work more and more independently with each new problem. I provide guidance and feedback throughout the lesson.

Prerequisites: Learners should be able to find the greatest common factor of numbers and variables. See my "Let's Learn" classes if your learner needs to learn that first.
