In this class, we'll explore the science as well as the history and mythology behind extreme weather. Class 1-- Thunderstorms and Floods We'll discuss questions like: What causes thunder? Where was the world's largest hailstorm? What safety precautions should you take if caught in a flash flood? Class 2-- Hurricanes and Tornadoes We'll discuss questions like: What causes tornadoes? What parts of the world are most prone to hurricanes? What was the most destructive hurricane to hit the United States? How has storm forecasting technology changed through the years? What safety precautions should you take if caught in a hurricane or tornado? What are weather myths? Class 3-- Earthquakes and Volcanoes We'll discuss the natural and man-made causes of earthquakes, touching on the fracking debate. We'll answer questions like: Where are earthquakes most common? How should construction differ in earthquake-prone places? Where were the world's largest earthquakes? What safety precautions should you take during an earthquake? How did ancient civilizations react to volcanoes? Class 4--Blizzards, Ice Storms, and Avalanches We'll discuss winter storm events and hazards including blizzards, ice storms, and avalanches. We'll discuss questions like: What causes avalanches? Where do blizzards usually occur? What safety precautions should you take to avoid being caught in a blizzard? Students will have the opportunity to share experiences with and questions about extreme weather events. Emphasis on the science of extreme weather as well as preparedness and safety practices will help students gain confidence to face extreme weather with reduced anxiety. *Please bring paper and pencil/marker/crayons to class for a Weather Safety Brochure. I will suggest an optional experiment relating to the weather studied each day. Students may complete experiments with parents, but this is not required. I will send an optional experiment materials list prior to the start of class, but while experiments will enhance the children's experience, they are not required to learn from the class.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Jennifer enjoys sharing her passion for writing, literature, and the creative arts with students of all ages. As a magazine and commercial writer for national and international corporations and publications, she has relished the great privilege of a career spent stringing words together.
Her background as an elementary school teacher and near decade of homeschooling a brood of four rowdy loves has revealed both the joy and struggle of teaching. She embraces a philosophy of literature based learning with heavy doses of nature thrown in for good measure, aspiring to but always falling quite short of the admirable principles of her mentor, Charlotte Mason.
In her free time, usually eeked out in the wee hours of the night when she should be sleeping, she enjoys devouring library books before her toddler wracks up fines by putting pen and marker to their tempting canvas of pages. She would love to count your children among those she is honored to teach.
