Nivel Beginner
In this ongoing class, we will explore different places and cultures around the world. There are no prerequisites for this class. This class has been designed differently than a semester-long class. Using the ongoing class format, we can spend as much or as little time on different places or regions as we need to so the students can fully appreciate and grasp the concepts. So, from the syllabus, one class could take as little as the hour meeting time scheduled, or it could continue into the...
- Students will gain knowledge of their world and its diverse customs and cultures, and hopefully see that people are just... people, no matter where they live or what their traditions may be.
I have taught and/or tutored these topics to students of various ages (elementary through graduate school levels). I have two BAs and an MA in ancient and world history, as well as the languages that are associated with them. I am a trained historian, and nothing makes me happier than seeing my students thrive and learning about the world.
There will be optional art projects for students to complete (for fun), and there are no set supplies you need to buy. Most things will be constructed with materials already found at home. NO CULTURAL APPROPRIATION will be involved in the creation of any projects. Students will be offered the opportunity to draw or paint flora/fauna/landscapes, if this interests them. Otherwise, they may choose to draw (write) a phrase in the language of that culture. All of this is optional. No textbooks are needed. After each class, I will upload the PowerPoint so the student can save it.

I will use Google Maps and Google Earth for locations and map reading. I am using the following books/articles for certain information: 1) Murdock, George Peter. Atlas of world cultures. University of Pittsburgh Pre, 1981; 2) Hauf, James E. "Teaching world cultures through artifacts." Journal of Geography 109, no. 3 (2010): 113-123; 3) David C. Virtue (2007) Folktales as a Resource in Social Studies: Possibilities and Pitfalls Using Examples from Denmark, The Social Studies, 98:1, 25-27, DOI: 10.3200/TSSS.98.1.25-27 4) Baldwin, Elaine, and Scott McCracken, eds. Introducing cultural studies. Routledge, 2014. 5) Duiker, William J., and Jackson J. Spielvogel. World History, Volume I: To 1800. Cengage Learning, 2015. 6) Duiker, William J., and Jackson J. Spielvogel. World History, Volume II: Since 1500. Cengage Learning, 2015. I will use video clips from YouTube and various images to show languages, music, dance, art, clothing, food, housing/shelters, etc., from the different cultures. None of these are rated as they are all academic in nature. None of them will show anything inappropriate OR of an inaccurate, culturally insensitive (false stereotypes) nature.
