In this class, we will discuss common disease processes at a developmentally appropriate level. Students need to have a basic knowledge of the human body prior to taking this class. I suggest that students have taken my 8 week human body class before taking this class. This course is perfect for students interested in the medical field. I am a Certified Child Life Specialist and have experience working in the hospital setting with children. Part of the role of a child life specialist is to help children understand medical procedures and tests by using developmentally appropriate language. I teach in an interactive manner and I love involving students in discussions by asking questions. I will teach the material using google slides presentations, discussion, short video clips, handouts and a weekly Kahoot review game. I love seeing students faces light up when they are excited about learning something new! Some topics in this class could be difficult for children to discuss so I encourage parents to read through the weekly topics in the syllabus below. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Each week in class we will review and talk about a different disease or disorder of the human body. Week 1 - common cold, influenza: why we get sick? Week 2 - asthma, cystic fibrosis: diseases of the lungs Week 3 - stroke, heart attack Week 4 - congenital heart disease, muscular dystrophy Week 5 - sickle cell anemia, epilepsy: what is a seizure? Week 6 - diabetes, type 1 and type 2: how does blood sugar work? Week 7 - cancer: what is a tumor? what is leukemia? Week 8 - REVIEW - Kahoot game
