In this class, students will continue to learn about the concept of melody. Students will learn 8 notes using solfege (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do), be able to follow along with music using a melody map and the musical staff, and create their own melody! We will use music from Moana, Coco, and The Lion King. This class will use a combination of a slideshow presentation, video & audio clips, group discussions, and group activities. The class will start with a short review of Exploring Music: Melody Part 1; we will identify the melody in music from "Moana" and the notes "Do, Mi, and Sol." Then, we will introduce our new notes ("Re, Fa, La, Ti"). To demonstrate that notes can be "high," "low," or "in the middle," we will return to our song from "Moana" and map out the "shape" of the melody, then follow along with the notes on the musical staff! This exercise will let learners see how different pitches/notes can be used in unique sequences (using steps, skips, and leaps) to create an interesting melody. Once our "toolbox" is full of notes, we will sing the notes in various patterns and illustrate them on a musical staff for visual recognition. As a group, the class will create a melody to sing together. Lastly, we will sing along to and trace maps of melodies from "Coco" and "The Lion King" to put our new knowledge to practice! Students will leave this class confident in their ability to follow the distinct "shape" of a melodic line, sing 8 notes in solfege, and create their own melodies. ****IMPORTANT: This class is appropriate for beginner musicians, but students should take the class "Exploring Music: Melody Part 1" before taking this class, or already be familiar with the following concepts: High/Low notes, solfege notes "Do, Mi, Sol," and can identify/sing along with the melody of a song.****

Hi there! My name is Carrie, I am a professional musician, arts administrator, and themed entertainment nerd. 😎
MUSIC CLASSES: I teach music classes about specialized and generalized topics.
Specialized classes are created with the goal of increasing musical and/or technical ability as a performer. Some of my favorite topics are sight-reading, audition preparation, exploring character and style in performance, and the flute.
Generalized classes take a look at topics like musical style, music history, and the elements of music. I love movies and television, themed entertainment (i.e. Disney, Universal, etc.), and the circus--all of which are excellent settings to learn about music! There's some pretty amazing music that can be found beyond the traditional concert hall, and the students and I are going to explore it together!
THEMED ENTERTAINMENT CLASSES: Calling all Theme Park enthusiasts! Want to talk about the history of a park, how an attraction works, or your favorite parade? My courses might be the place for you! Together, we will share our love for themed entertainment and delve into topics such as: design elements, use of Intellectual Property (IP), the concept of "edutainment," use of music in a themed setting, ride systems, and more (even a little bit of trivia, too).
