**This class is a 1:1 class that can meet once, twice or three times per week depending on the learner's schedule and needs , learners may choose to engage with the entire programme or select elements that best suit their needs.** Objective: To engage students in critical analysis, reading comprehension, writing, and language skills through the exploration of classic literary texts. Class Structure: 1. Reading Comprehension and Analysis (Standards: RL.8.1, RL.8.2, RL.8.3) 🔖Book 1: "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain Students will read chapters of the book weekly and engage in guided discussions to analyze characters, plot development, and themes. Activities include character analysis charts, plot diagrams, and group discussions to foster critical thinking. 2. Writing Skills Development (Standards: W.8.1, W.8.3, W.8.4) 🔖Book 2: "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott Students will explore different writing styles, such as narrative and descriptive writing, by emulating the author's techniques. Writing assignments may include character monologues, journal entries from a character's perspective, or creative story extensions. 3. Language and Grammar Focus (Standards: L.8.1, L.8.2, L.8.3) 🔖Book 3: "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett Language and grammar exercises will be integrated, focusing on identifying literary devices, vocabulary expansion, and sentence structure. Students will analyze passages to identify figurative language, conduct word studies, and practice writing varied sentence structures. 4. Speaking and Listening Activities (Standards: SL.8.1, SL.8.2, SL.8.3) 🔖Book 4: "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens Group readings and dramatic enactments of key scenes to enhance oral reading fluency and public speaking skills. Socratic seminars or debates on the book's themes, encouraging active listening and critical thinking through discussions. 5. Culminating Project: 🔖Book 5: Student's Choice - Select one among "Treasure Island," "Anne of Green Gables," or "The Time Machine." Students will choose a book from the provided list to read independently. They will create a comprehensive project, which may include a literary analysis essay, a creative presentation, or a visual representation of themes and characters. Assessment: Formative assessments (discussions, quizzes, journal reflections) throughout the class. Summative assessments (writing assignments, projects, oral presentations) aligning with ELA standards. To summarise: This comprehensive class aims to immerse 8th-grade students in classic literature, fostering critical thinking, language development, and appreciation for diverse literary styles while aligning with ELA core standards. Through engaging activities and deep analysis of these texts, students will develop essential skills for academic success in English Language Arts.
