Grado de EE. UU. 4 - 6
Nivel Beginner
This biology course for grades 4-6 gives students an overview of biology. Using the REAL Science Odyssey curriculum as a foundation, students learn what life is and how it functions. Students meet twice a week to learn concepts, complete experiments, and review assignments. This class is PART 1 in a 4-part series. Students may take this class as a stand-along class, however, when combined with the other 3 parts it makes a full 36-week curriculum. In PART 1, students learn: -What...

Unit 1Intro to BiologyIntro to Biology4 lessons2 WeeksWeek 1Lesson 1My Pet TardigradeStudent meet a fictional pet tardigrade that will be with them throughout the year to teach them Biology. They also see what real tardigrades look like under the microscope.Lesson 2Tardigrade PosterStudents make a poster of a Tardigrade, which they will add to throughout the year. This will help them make connections from what they're learning to something they already know.Week 2Lesson 3What is AliveStudents look at characteristics of life and decide what makes something alive. They learn about the scientific process.Lesson 4Nature Observation ProjectStudents are introduced to a Nature Observation Project that they can work on for the next 7 weeks.Unit 2Building Blocks of LifeBuilding Blocks of Life8 lessons4 WeeksWeek 3Lesson 5Cell TheoryStudents learn that cells are the building blocks of all life. They will look at microscopic pictures of cells.Lesson 6Cell ModelsStudents make models of plant and animal cells with pudding and fruit.Week 4Lesson 7Single-Celled OrganismsStudents learn about single-celled organisms like bacteria and amoeba.Lesson 8BacteriaStudents design an experiment involving growing bacteria.Week 5Lesson 9MicrobesStudents learn about other microbes, including "good" bacteria, like yeast. They'll make their own pizza dough with these microbes.Lesson 10Bacteria ConclusionStudents share the results of their bacteria experiment. Students will also start growing bean plants for several experiments later in the course.Week 6Lesson 11Nutritional HealthStudents learn about ways to keep themselves healthy by eating the right things. They learn about the 5 food groups and look at food labels.Lesson 12Healthy Food PlanStudents see how much sugar common foods contain, and learn about the effects of too much sugar on their bodies. Then they are challenged to design a food plan for a day that includes healthy balances of food.Unit 3GeneticsGenetics3 lessons2 WeeksWeek 7Lesson 13What is DNAStudents learn about DNA and make a model of DNA using marshmallows and licorice.Lesson 14Looking at DNAStudents learn about chromosomes and then extract DNA from a strawberry. If they own a microscope, they can view it under the microscope.Week 8Lesson 15InheritanceStudents learn about family traits and inheritance. They use this knowledge to imagine what a new baby in the family might look like.Unit 4Cells Make OrganismsCells Make Organisms3 lessons2 WeeksWeek 8Lesson 16Plants are OrganismsStudents learn how cells come together to make things like plants and animals. They dissect a plant to investigate all of its separate parts. They will also start growing plants for later experiments.Week 9Lesson 17Animals are OrganismsStudents dissect a frog (real or on paper) and investigate all of the parts of the animal that make it work.Lesson 18Animals are OrganismsStudents complete their frog dissection.
- After completion of this class, students will be able to: -List the characteristics of life -Understand what a cell is and what it looks like -Name some single-celled organisms like bacteria and amoeba -Describe the importance of DNA -Determine the components of healthy eating

1 archivo disponible al momento de la inscripciónStudents will need the following for class. These materials are used in ALL FOUR PARTS of this Biology course, so if you purchase them for this class, you will not need to purchase them again. Biology 1 Student Pages ($24): https://www.pandiapress.com/product/real-science-odyssey-biology-level-1-student-pages/ A 3-RING BINDER is also a good idea as a place to store lab pages, notes, and drawings as we work through the experiments. In addition to the textbook and workbook, students will need other materials for labs. You will receive a detailed supply list before the first class. Most items may be found around the house, but occasionally you will need to purchase special materials, such as: -Petri Dishes -Small live plant -Bean seeds, pots & soil -Frog for dissection (available online at Home Science Tools)
Students will be doing experiments both in and out of class. Some of these experiments involve using sharp tools, such as knives and scissors. Please be advised that your student may need supervision during these activities.
