In this class, we will learn about what an atom and molecule are and about the structure of each. We will also learn about what matter is and how matter can change into different states including solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. Week 1 - History of the Periodic table. What is an atom? Building an atom (paper plate, craft puffy balls) Week 2 - What is a molecule? How do atoms bond together? Building a candy molecule (gumdrops, toothpicks) Week 3 - What is matter and how do the different states...

(Solid, liquid, gas, plasma)Week 4Lesson 4Changing states of matterHow do the states of matter change from one to another?Week 5Lesson 5Non-Newtonian fluidsNon-Newtonian fluid - let's make one....oobleckWeek 6Lesson 6ReviewLet's Review and make ice cream in a bag! We will play a final Kahoot Game.
I will provide weekly handouts that students should bring to class. Week 1 - Building an atom (paper plate, craft puffy balls) Week 2 - Building a candy molecule (gumdrops, toothpicks) Week 3 - Solid, liquid, gas, plasma (cheerios) Week 4 - How do the states of matter change from one to another. (glass of ice) Week 5 - Oobleck (cornstarch, pitcher of water, aluminum pie pans, measuring cups, mixing spoon, table cloth or newspaper to protect the table, food coloring if you would like to color your oobleck Week 6 - Ice cream in a bag! (measuring spoons, measuring cup, sugar, half and half, milk or heavy cream, vanilla extract, salt (table salt or rock salt), ice cubes, small sealable ziploc bags (2), gallon ziploc bags (2), small towel or oven mitts, timer/clock
Students will need supervision for experiments. Parents are encourages to stay close by but reminder that Outschool policy requires that adults remain off camera during class.
