Experiencia de clase

Exploring American Sign Language Part 3 is going to be continuation of Parts 1 & 2.
Students will learn by interaction with myself. I will show students the sign and then ask them to repeat that sign. In this class it is extremely important to have your camera on. Especially during the last two classes when we work on conversations. Sign is a visual language. In order to learn and get the most out of the class the student will need to have their camera on. When students are making the sign I will watch them and praise them when the sign is done correctly and gently guide them if needed. Students will have interactions with other students by practicing with each other in class. During this class I use a combination of pictures, games, and other visual aids. The class time will go as follows: Introduction (3 minutes), Warm Up/Review (3 minutes) Lesson (15 minutes) Wrap Up/Practice with Others (5 minutes), Closing / Whats Next (4 Minutes).
Topics for class
In this section of ASL we will be working on fingerspelling and a daily sentence each class beginning on the second day of this class.
Fingerspelling practice is where I will fingerspell a list of words with a topic such as ice cream flavors, animals or colors and students will be watching to check for comprehension. After all the words have been signed, we will go over the list together. More directions, tips and tricks will be given in class. This exercise will be given to help students with their fingerspelling and to expand on new skills they are developing.
A daily sentence will also be given each class beginning on the second day of this class. A daily sentence is a signed sentence where students will try to work on their comprehension of ASL. More directions, tip and tricks will be given during class.
Topics for class
Week 1 Class 1: Money and age( dollar, money, buy,) and weather & nature ( summer, winter, grass, sky) Also in this class the teacher will give instruction on an optional assignment that students can participate in outside of class. I love American Sign Language and I enjoy teaching this beautiful language. I have taken 4 years of formal ASL classes. I have also taught middle school ASL in a traditional classroom setting. I was also a 1st grade teacher for a few years! I also enjoy signing songs in ASL for different events. I have been teaching on Outschool for a year and have taught over 500 students!
When a hearing person teaches ASL they are not just about teaching individual signs but rather teaching the whole package of ASL and Deaf culture. ASL is not just a signed version of English. It is made up of facial expressions, body language, non verbal signs, grammar and Deaf culture. The culture and community is so rich with history and values that should be taught right alongside the grammar and signs of ASL. When learning and teaching ASL we all need to honor the language and culture by learning every aspect.
