Qué está incluido

12 reuniones en vivo
15 horas presenciales
Tarea
2-4 horas por semana. Learners will be expected to complete weekly workbook assignments, any other assigned work, as well as participate in discussion posts to the best of their ability. Recording and Written Homework should be submitted as requested to assess learner progress. Students may spend approximately 3 hours per week completing homework and studying combined-depending on the student. At the very least learners should be spending at least 30 mins daily reviewing vocabulary and grammar. Korean is a challenging language and study and practice is a big part of aiding in language acquisition especially as our class only meets once a week.
Evaluación
An assessment will be provided to the parent/guardian and learner at the completion of the course along with an invitation to continue to the next level if appropriate. During the course assignment feedback will provided to the learner via learner message. Learners should follow provided feedback. During the course if a learner is not within the appropriate scope of progress, parents/guardians and learner will be notified to hopefully help the learner stay on track to progress-increased study, re-doing assignments, making sure workbook practice is completed.

REQUIRED PRE-REQUISITE: Explore Korean for Teens: Introduction to Hangul! https://outschool.com/classes/explore-korean-for-teens-introduction-to-hangul-JxaKx0Db#usot9GxxEq
Students MUST either have taken the above course OR communicate with the Instructor prior to registration in order to have an assessment done to approve them for this course.
Please take the time to read all the class information sections!

Please be aware that this course requires students to devote daily study and practice time outside of class in order to progress well and be able to fully participate in class. There is weekly out of class workbook practice as well as assignments (oral and written) to be submitted to the instructor for evaluation. Korean is a challenging language and the goal of this course is mastery over the learned material. This course does not grade but uses progress assessment (through in-class performance AND submitted assignments) to determine eligibility to continue to the next level. Self-motivation will be necessary on the part of the learner. This course may be especially appealing to those students possibly interested in studying Korean at the University/College level later on!

Students are required during class to interact verbally and visually, if possible, with the other students and the instructor to answer questions and more effectively practice speaking, reading and pronunciation-please contact the instructor PRIOR to the course if you need accommodation.

The class meeting time is 75 minutes approximately. Instruction will be done via discussion, speaking practice, reading outloud, written practice, as well as short lectures and powerpoint. When possible and relevant, authentic source material, videos, music, etc. will be used. Students will participate in both vocabulary and grammar based activities as well as short speaking assessments to allow the learner as well as the instructor to assess the student's progress and make relevant study suggestions to the student individually.

Over the course students will learn to build and practice their basic speaking and writing skills, as well as their listening and reading abilities through introduction to simple conversations and starting to communicate about everyday activities. Students will be instructed in foundational Korean grammar, be introduced to relevant Korean cultural topics, and hone their Korean pronunciation and intonation skills as well. The course will cover primarily material from the first 2 lessons of the 2nd edition textbook Integrated Korean Beginning 1 which is required to be purchased for this class.

Students will learn:
Classes 1-6: How to introduce oneself and describing another person in basic terms, country, ethnicity, school level, and the accompanying grammar and vocabulary as well as relevant cultural points. Classroom Expressions. Sino Korean numbers 1-31. Fluency in self-introduction and basic reading comprehension.

Classes 6-12: How to inquire and tell about the location of something or someone, use basic descriptions of people, objects and weather, use verbs and adjectives in the appropriate speech level and correct formulation, and the accompanying grammar and vocabulary as well as relevant cultural points. Fluency in using locative particles and describing.
Metas de aprendizaje
At the end of the course students will start being comfortable conversing and reading Korean using the learned grammar and communication structures. Students will be able to introduce themselves and others in basic terms, ask and answer how something or someone is, as well as describe location using learned prepositions. Students will be able to write a self-introduction and using learned topics (location, description [taste and other learned adjectives], basic activities) structure correct sentences.

Orientación para padres
In order to have access to resources to further study Korean language and vocabulary students will need to be able to access the Korean Multimedia Dictionary and the Learning Hangul Site. To use them (as they both use Flash) the extension known as Ruffle will need to be installed-this can be installed as a browser extension or desktop. The Korean Multimedia Dictionary and Learning Hangul Site were created by my Korean professor Lee Hyo Sang at Indiana University Bloomington and are used as part of Korean instruction at the university. Ruffle was created by professional developers in order to allow people to still access sites using Flash that were unable to be converted into HTML5 due to financial or other constraints. All of these resources are safe and appropriate to use and Parents are welcome to explore the resources along with their learners.

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I majored in East Asian Languages and Cultures (Concentration: Korea) at Indiana University Bloomington. I spent a total of 3 years in immersive Korean language study including a study abroad semester at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. While at Indiana University I received the Uehara Prize for Excellence in East Asian Studies as well as the Society of Friends of Korean Studies Fellowship. Post graduation I lived and worked in Korea for 2.5 years where I was able to immerse myself culturally and linguistically. I have been teaching Korean at the TN Language Center since July 2019.

I have worked in Montessori classrooms as well as more traditional classrooms working with young children as well as teens. I bring my TEFL training as well as my experience teaching English as a foreign language to all my language classes. Additionally, having been a foreign language student myself I know the challenges that many learners face in acquiring a new language and seek to make new concepts-grammar, vocab, phonics-as accessible and as comprehensible as possible through various means-media, powerpoint, activities, drills-by whatever means possible! I love learning new things everyday and hope that my classes would pass along not only knowledge but the attitude that knowledge and learning are valuable and exciting!
