Ever see a really cool ancient structure on TV, in a book, or real life, and just wonder: "How did they build that? And what was it for!?" We're going to explore those questions and answer them in this class! This 4-week unit will cover 4 ancient stone structures or monuments, discuss who built them and why, and offer insight into both the cultures that created them, and the time period in which they were built. Each meeting covers geography of the region, history of the specific area, and an archaeology/social studies-based discussion of each monument or structure. Students will be encouraged to add their own observations and challenged to use new knowledge and inference to form clear ideas of why such complex structures were built in the past! Each week we will look at a stone monument or structure from a different location: Week 1: The Colossal Heads of Central America Week 2: The Plain of Jars in Eastern Asia Week 3: The Cliffside Palace of North America Week 4: The Moai of the Polynesian Triangle This class is listed as 40 minutes, but depending on class size and participation, may run up to 50 minutes.
