Tarea
1 hora por semana. Students will sometimes have homework to complete depending on how far we get in the lesson each week. It might be in the form of completing a worksheet (printed or digital) or in the application of an executive function concept to something they are already working on for another class.
Evaluación
Informal assessment (observational) available upon request.

Why teach executive functioning skills?

Executive functioning skills are the skills in our brains that help us accomplish daily tasks, work through challenges, and meet goals. These are critical skills that help students inside and outside of school every day. All students can benefit from building and strengthening executive functioning strategies.

What skills are targeted in this course?

Executive functioning skills targeted in this set include: planning, organization, time management, task initiation, working memory, metacognition, self-control, attention, flexibility, and perseverance. This class serves as a basic introduction to each of the skills. It provides practice and introduces strategies to help support learners in improving these skills.

How do the skills work together?

It is important to note that all executive functioning skills work together. For example, planning also requires a certain level of organization and time management. Similarly, flexibility requires one to have some self-control over
emotions and plan before solving a problem.

Breakdown of the class hour:
30 min Introducing concepts
30 min Application, Practice and Extension of the concepts

Methods of Instruction:
Discussion, short video clips (when applicable), group sharing homework, screen sharing ideas and homework

Teaching Style:
Friendly, structured, relational, lots of discussion and encouragement of participation from students

Orientación para padres
Google Drive - access shared documents (students may print PDFs for classwork option) Google Slides - access shared documents (students may type on the slides for classwork option) Google Jamboard - students and teacher collaborate in real-time on a shared "jamboard". Similar to Google Slides but participants can work together on the same content and see each other's contributions on the same page. Access to a google account (student or parent) is required for this class.

Learners should be able to either print out the worksheets assigned weekly OR may complete them digitally with access to Google Slides.  Students will need access to a google account and drive for this class.  It can be their own or a parents'.

Organization and time-management have always come easy to me.  I'm a visual and auditory learner and have learned strategies that help me based on these areas of strength.  I have tutored many students (and adult friends!) in these skills from organizing a schedule/calendar, to setting up and maintaining chore charts, to organizing a pantry or making menu planning and grocery list less of a hassle and more efficient.  I love to teach people creative ways to get organized and prioritized.  Often, identifying a learning modality or learning style is helpful when learning how to better manage "cognitive control" which is a synonym for executive function.
