▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS INTRO ▬▬▬▬▬
Welcome to the "Exciting Earth Science" series, which focuses on some of the most dramatic physical forces on Earth, with the aim of making learning fun and exhilarating. I think making lessons enjoyable and bringing science to life is the best way to get kids engaged and learning without realising it. My classes focus on the Geology and Geophysics part of Earth Science. No previous experience necessary.

▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS SUMMARY ▬▬▬▬▬
This class will discuss the scientific evidence that suggests that the dinosaurs went extinct because of an asteroid strike that caused a winter that lasted many years. For a long time scientists thought it was because of high levels of volcanic activity over a long time, but recent geological discoveries in the rock formations in Mexico have changed peoples' minds. We look at the evidence for the asteroid strike theory and why it is so convincing. We then look at other major extinction events that show up in the fossil record and how frequently they happen. Finally we discuss what this means for the human race and if we are causing the next big extinction right now and maybe causing our own extinction in the future. This is a great way to explore how life on Earth changes over time and depends on a stable climate. It's a great fun way to learn more about our own existence in this story of our planet over Geological Time.

▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS STYLE ▬▬▬▬▬
I use powerpoint presentations for all my classes, so I can mix text and multimedia and make the class more interesting. This class will be run using an "intro-discussion-repeat" format. This means I will take a few minutes to introduce a topic, using images or videos wherever appropriate in order to bring the subject alive. Then we will pause to take questions and make sure everyone is keeping up. Then we'll move on to the next exciting sub-topic and supporting material, and then pause for questions after that one too. This means that you can enjoy the class however you like. Speak up and get involved and ask questions, or just listen and enjoy with no pressure. If you like this class then you check out my full "Earth Science" courses, with subjects cherry picked to choose the most interesting, accessible and relevant Earth Science subjects for kids, so they learn to enjoy exploring the world around them.

▬▬▬▬▬▬ LINKED TOPICS ▬▬▬▬▬
This class can be taken on its own, but is best understood along with my other "Exciting Earth Science" classes on:
1) Exciting Earth Science: Sedimentary Rock Layers, Petrified Animals & Drowned Forests
2) Exciting Earth Science: Geological Time, Continental Drift, Pangea & the Fossil Record
Please see my other class listings for more lessons in the School of Hard Rocks!
Metas de aprendizaje
To discover and learn without realising it, because you are having fun! By the end of this course students will understand the mechanisms behind major extinction events inclusing the one that wiped out the dinosaurs. They will also be able to link how stability in the environment is crucial to our own long term existence.

Orientación para padres
This class talks about mass extinction events, including the possibility of humans creating one now that may lead to our own extinction. This may be distressing for some students.
