Experiencia de clase

Roll your initiative! If you find mythology, monsters, mayhem, and magic interesting, come join us and talk about your favorite D&D stories!

In this ongoing class, we will be deep-diving into what goes into the popularized table top role playing game, Dungeons and Dragons. Learners of all experience levels are welcome, from veteran heroes to brand new adventurers, as all will come together to share in this discussion about what they are interested in, what they like or what they love about D&D. This class is structured to be a conversion of learners from all backgrounds and levels of experience, focusing on honing social skills and knowledge of how to express differing opinions respectfully. I will direct this class by having focal questions or prompts for the learners to address, then moderating with necessary information, discussion etiquette, classroom rules and expectation reminders (as needed), and my own experience with D&D as requested. The teaching style will focus on using the passion or interest of a shared commonality to help students connect to one another and learn not only tips and tricks for our favorite game, but also life-long abilities in navigating communication-based meetings with others. Together, we will explore all the aspects of D&D and how the abilities in the game can be seen in our world today. Each week we will have a planned agenda and discussion points, to which students can enter into an open-ended conversation and share their ideas, thoughts and opinions with one another. Below is an outline of what the classroom topics will focus on:

Our first classes will be what we call a "Session 0" where students learn the basic fundamentals of what Dungeons and Dragons is all about - a story! This includes character creation, background histories, and world building. These conversations are what bring the students together as they share their favorite pieces about characters they have played or have yet to play, worlds they explored or are just now dreaming up, and some of their favorite character moments.

From the character and world building stage, we will move on to the first big adventure. This is where stories and ideas about dungeon crawls will be swapped, thoughts on leveling characters can be exchanged, and inklings or memories about what makes a great NPC (non-player character) can be investigated.

After the initial adventuring discussions, the next mile marker is what everyone knows and loves about table top role playing games: the monsters. Original monsters from the monster manual will be compared against home-brewed creatures; the real-world histories behind so many beasts, brutes and behemoths will be investigated; everything from the first goblins to the final BBEG (Big Bad Evil Guy) of a campaign is welcomed to these conversations.

Other discussions in the course will include, but are not limited to: weapons, spells, items, animal companions / familiars, and game mechanics.

Metas de aprendizaje

This class is focused on discussion, classmate support and encouraging learning through fun. By the end of this class, students will have expanded their knowledge and understanding of multiple ideas pertaining to D&D, and enhanced their abilities to lead as well as support a conversation. Students will improve their abilities to navigate a discussion with multiple participants by learning then applying discussion etiquette as directed by the teacher.

I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons for almost a decade, and have experience in multiple classes, campaigns and worlds. Beyond that, I have plenty of experience mitigating conversations and helping students to work together, as I am a certified teacher that has been teaching for the past 6 years.
