Welcome to Essential Elementary Grammar!

In this class, students will learn basic language skills: sentence structure, mechanics, and parts of speech. This class is designed around 2nd grade common core literacy standards but is suitable for grades 1-3 or any older students needing a refresher on parts of speech and sentence mechanics. 

Each week, we will cover the topic listed. Students can drop in any week, as skills will be topics that can stand alone. Students will listen to the teacher teach the skill. We will do several examples in class using Teacher Created slides/videos. Students will have practice opportunities in class. 


TOPICS COVERED: 
Week of 8/26: What is a Sentence? Students will learn that a sentence forms a complete thought. They will recognize sentences from fragments and run ons.

Week of 9/2: Identifying Sentences: Students will continue to learn that a sentence forms a complete thought. They will recognize sentences from fragments and run ons.

Week of 9/9: Telling Sentences: Students will learn which sentences require the use of a period.

Week of 9/16: Asking Sentences: Students will learn which sentences require the using of a question mark.

Week of 9/23: Exclamations! Students will learn which sentences require the use of an exclamation point.

Week of 9/30: Categorizing Nouns: Students will learn review that a noun is a person, place, or thing.

Week of 10/7: Singular or Plural? Students will practice sorting nouns into groups: singular or plural. We will learn rules for making nouns plural.

Week of 10/14: Proper Nouns: Students will distinguish nouns from proper nouns and will practice capitalizing them.

Week of 10/21: Proper Nouns Continued-Students will distinguish nouns from proper nouns and will practice capitalizing them.

Week of 10/28: Collective Nouns: Students will practice using collective nouns to describe groups of nouns.

Week of 11/4: Irregular Plural Nouns: Students will learn irregular plural nouns.

Week of 11/11: Irregular Plural Nouns- Continued: Students will learn irregular plural nouns.

Week of 11/18: Pronouns: Students will use personal pronouns.

My name is Teacher Meg. I am so glad you're here!

I am excited to offer different types of classes including... but not limited to:
Pre-K/Kindergarten skills (ages 4-6), Sight Words Classes (ages 4-7), First Grade Phonics, Writing Sentences, English as a Second Language (ESL) **Private Tutoring & Group Conversational English practice,  & Story Time/Art (elementary). 

My Background:
I obtained a Bachelor of Science in 2012 from Barton College in North Carolina. I am a licensed teacher in the areas of Elementary Education K-5, Middle Grades Mathematics 6-9, and Special Education K-12. I also hold a TESOL (Teaching English to speakers of other languages) certificate. I have 7 years of public school teaching experience. Currently, I am a Work-At-Home mom of two kids. I have been teaching online for the past 3 years, so I understand the importance of making students feel welcome and included in this setting.

My Philosophy:
I believe all children are capable of being successful, regardless of their backgrounds. I believe that every child has different strengths and can use their strengths to overcome their weaker areas. I also think that the more fun a child has, the more they will want to learn. 

Fun Facts About Me:
-I have a husband, a daughter, and a son. Both of my children enjoy taking classes on Outschool.
-I have 3 dogs and 1 cat.
-I enjoy running, baking, and finding new restaurants/places to visit.
-My favorite color is blue.
