In this class, students will learn the essential concepts they need to understand and master the Math sections of the ACT and SAT. Students will learn about the most important areas of focus for this section of the test and learn how to apply the basic concepts to word problems and integrate the different concepts into multi-step problems. Test-taking skills may be mentioned initially and at points during the instruction, but it is not the focus of this class beyond acquainting students with the structure of the tests and how to approach certain problems. Students will be expected to take notes, complete homework, and participate in class if called on or voice any questions they may have about the test or concepts being covered. Week 1: Introduction & Ratios Pt. 1 Class 1: Introduction to the tests. Here, students will learn about the layout of each of the tests, the timing for questions in the Math sections, and the key concepts covered (as well of the weight of each concepts) on the test. Students will be able to ask any questions they may have about the test. Class 2: Operations with fractions, comparing fractions, converting fractions/decimals/percents, basic percent problems ----------------------------------------------------------------- Week 2: Ratios Pt. 2 Class 1: Advanced percent problems, ratio problems, simple interest problems Class 2: Ratio word problems and advanced ratios ----------------------------------------------------------------- Week 3: Data & Analysis Class 1: Mean, median, mode, & range, basic probability, proportions Class 2: Two-way tables, charts, and interpreting data ----------------------------------------------------------------- Week 4: Equations Pt. 1 Class 1: One, two, and multi-step equations, properties of exponents, simplifying variable expressions Class 2: Literal equations, writing algebraic expressions, algebraic word problems ----------------------------------------------------------------- Week 5: Equations Pt. 2 Class 1: Systems of equations in formulas and graphs Class 2: All about quadratics ----------------------------------------------------------------- Week 6: Radicals & Plane Geometry Class 1: Operations with radicals Class 2: Area, surface area, volume, similar shapes ----------------------------------------------------------------- Week 7: Coordinate Geometry Class 1: Slope, midpoint, and distance Class 2: Finding angles and transversals ----------------------------------------------------------------- Week 8: Basic Trigonometry Class 1: Pythagorean Theorem, special right triangles, basic trig functions Class 2: Finding angles and sides using basic trig functions ----------------------------------------------------------------- Week 9: Advanced Math Class 1: Matrices, Logarithms, and complex numbers Class 2: Putting it all together - advanced problems. This class will focus on the hardest questions covered on the test and will involve integrating multiple concepts together which was covered in earlier classes. Students will also have some time to ask any remaining questions.
Metas de aprendizaje
The goal of this class is to acquaint students with all of the core concepts they need to increase their scores on the ACT or SAT Math sections. We will talk about all the essential concepts and how much of each concept appears on the test so that students can determine the most effective use of their study time to prepare for the exams. Students will be expected to take notes and participate in class as necessary as well as voicing any questions they may have about the test or concept within class or to me through Outschool between classes.

Orientación para padres
Students will be expected to take notes, complete homework, and participate in class if called on or voice any questions they may have about the test or concepts being covered.
Any additional materials such as practice problems and practice tests will be provided for free within the class. Students will not be required to access any external resources during or after class besides the use of a calculator - a physical scientific calculator or website like Desmos is recommended. An account is not necessary to use Desmos, and students can access the graphing calculator at https://www.desmos.com/calculator or the scientific calculator at https://www.desmos.com/scientific. I will use Desmos at times within instruction to demonstrate certain concepts.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students should come to class with a calculator, notebook, pencil, and whatever other materials they need to take notes. Students should be prepared to take notes, ask questions, and complete homework assignments. Calculators should be scientific and should be able to complete basic functions like squaring and square roots easily. Graphing calculators are not necessary to take the test, though some versions are allowed. Check with the College Board and ACT to see whether or not your student's calculator is allowed for the test. https://www.act.org/content/dam/act/unsecured/documents/ACT-calculator-policy.pdf https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/digital/what-to-bring-do/calculator-policy An online calculator like Desmos will suffice, but students should get and practice how to use a calculator like the one they will use on the test so that they will know how to quickly use their calculator to solve problems. As the SAT is moving to a digital version, a calculator from Desmos is provided within the test. All other resources for practice will be provided by the teacher from the sources listed above and in the descriptions. All resources will be provided within class for free, though additional resources can be seen or purchased from the Strive Academics content library at: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Strive-Academics/Category/ACT-Test-Prep-413387 https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Strive-Academics/Category/SAT-Test-Prep-413388

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Ralston has been teaching students for the ACT and SAT, as well as many other standardized tests, since 2011. Ralston has a great depth of knowledge about all the concepts needed to pass the test as well as the essential test-taking strategies needed for these exams, common questions students have and common mistakes students make, and the various changes that have and are coming to these exams. On average, Ralston's students have seen 12 - 20% increases in their scores on average (amounting to roughly 100-200 points on the SAT and 3 - 6 points on the ACT) within 4 - 8 regular sessions. His students have gone on to attend top colleges in his area and the nation, including Yale, U Penn, Emory, UGA, Georgia State, and more.
