In this exciting and interactive 5-week book club, readers ages 8-12 will dive into the pages of Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein and experience the thrill of puzzles, challenges, and teamwork—just like the characters in the story!
This isn’t your typical book club. Every session includes story-inspired games and challenges that let students experience the excitement of Mr. Lemoncello’s Library. By the end of the course, your child will have an increased excitement for reading!

Each week, students will engage in fun and interactive activities, including scavenger hunts, logic puzzles, and even a custom-designed escape room experience based on the events of the book. These hands-on activities are designed to help learners experience the book’s adventures firsthand while building comprehension, expanding vocabulary, and strengthening higher-order thinking skills as well as a love for reading.
Week 1: Get to know each other, enjoy a book talk, and participate in a scavenger hunt.
Week 2: Dive into the story with an Extreme Challenge (part 1).
Week 3: Continue the adventure with Extreme Challenge (part 2).
Week 4: Discuss the book and solve a thrilling logic puzzle.
Week 5: Put it all together for the grand finale—an Escape Room Challenge inspired by Mr. Lemoncello's Library!
This isn’t your typical book club. Each session brings the story to life with engaging games and interactive activities that mirror the fun and creativity of Mr. Lemoncello's world. Learners will also have the opportunity to share their thoughts, ask questions, and interact with peers, creating a vibrant and collaborative learning environment.
Students will read a portion of the book each week at home (no book reading will take place during class time).
Activities, such as vocabulary challenges and open-ended discussion questions, will help deepen understanding and foster connections between the text and real life.
The first week is all about introductions and setting the stage for our journey—no prior reading required! By the end of the course, your child will walk away with improved reading comprehension, an expanded vocabulary, and a love for literature that lasts a lifetime.

For the first week of class, the learners will not be required to have already begun reading the book. We will do introductions, a book talk, and a game related to what they will be reading.
What will be taught:
Reading comprehension strategies, including making predictions, drawing connections, and analyzing the story.
Vocabulary expansion through fun challenges and discussions.
Problem-solving skills and teamwork through interactive games inspired by the book’s events.
What will be covered:
Story elements like plot, setting, and character development.
Higher-order thinking skills, including inference and critical analysis.
Text-to-self and text-to-world connections to make literature meaningful

How I will teach:
I will teach using questions to guide the conversations as well as encourage the learners to ask questions or talk about parts of the story they wish to discuss more. I will use games and activities to help the learners connect with the story and its themes. 
What’s my teaching style? 
My teaching style is conversational and supportive, with a focus on encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork. Each student will have opportunities to share their ideas, ask questions, and participate in discussions.
How much will learners get to interact with me as well as other learners?
The learners will collaborate with their peers during discussions and activities. 
They will be encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas in a welcoming, judgement-free environment. 
They will be allowed to ask questions and receive feedback throughout the course.

Students will be using higher-order thinking skills in order to respond to challenges and open-ended questions related to the story Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library. They will also be improving skills related to responding to literature during this class.

 This week, we will get to know each other, learn a little about the book, make some predictions, and play a scavenger hunt based on what will be coming up in the story. The children will be given a homework assignment to read a portion of the book and be prepared to discuss it the following session.

We will also  make text to self connections, vocabulary, and character traits. The children will be given a homework assignment to read a portion of the book and be prepared to discuss it the following session.

One of the themes of this book is bullying. Please be aware that this may come up in discussion.
Requisitos previos
The learner must be able to read or listen to approximately 10 pages of the book per day between classes to be at the portions of the book that will be discussed at the next meeting.

    I have been a teacher in brick-and-mortar schools for over 30 years. During this time, I taught reading and hosted book clubs as both a teacher and a Library Media Specialist. The book does contain the theme of bullying. I am qualified to teach this theme as I am certified as a teacher of children with Emotional and Behavior Disorders. I spent the majority of my  teaching in this field.
