Clase

Qué está incluido

4 reuniones en vivo
3 horas 20 minutos horas presenciales
Tarea
1-2 horas por semana. Each week, learners will be challenged about how to build a "new and improved" version of our object of the week. They can create a rough three-dimensional prototype (preferred) or sketch their ideas.
Evaluación
Learners will have the opportunity to show and tell their inventions at the beginning of class.

Did you know that engineers have designed *everything* you can buy in a store? From shoes to backpacks to pencils to clothespins, engineers have designed them all.

In this class, we will learn how to discover the engineering questions behind things we use everyday. We'll explore questions that drive innovation like:
-- How do objects that we use everyday help us solve problems?
-- How do engineers go about improving inventions?
-- Why are store shelves filled with different models of the same inventions?
-- How do factories make the objects that we can buy in stores?

Each week, we focus on a different invention. We will start by talking about frequently overlooked objects like clothespins and pencils. Additionally, students will be encouraged to suggest objects they want to explore for a truly student-centered learning experience. Class time is a discussion time where learners will have the opportunity to dialog with the teacher. I frequently incorporate video and other media to bring our discussions to life. No supplies are needed to attend class.

After each class meeting, students will be challenged to brainstorm and build a "new and improved" version of that week's object. When it comes to building, I encourage students to do rapid prototypes with materials they find around the house. You'd be amazed at what kids can build when they rummage through the recycling bin. Duct tape and cardboard can also be very helpful building supplies.

Metas de aprendizaje

Students will be able to:
-- Ask questions to explore how engineers bring ideas to life
-- Identify improvements for everyday objects
-- Think creatively with recycled materials
-- Practice prototyping
