Homework is available upon request or if parents mention they would prefer their learner be assigned weekly homework to continue practicing the skills we are working on. It varies depending on the needs of the learner and wishes of the family.

Parents will receive a periodic progress report, which will indicate "progress" or "mastery" of the skills we have worked on throughout the week. I will also jot anecdotal notes about each session (I like to call them "glows and grows").

**Note: please message me if you are interested in a specific time that is not listed, and we can work together to make this happen. I am happy to take requests, as it is my privilege to teach your child in my classroom! I LOVE teaching and I make each lesson based on your child’s specific learning needs, as well as incorporating their interests.

If your learner could benefit from private, individualized to their specific interests and educational needs, quality tutoring from an experienced, patient, engaging, positive, and creative educator, I'd love to help. This one-on-one tutoring class will be created, designed, and individualized specifically for your child, based on their current needs, desire to be challenged (or presented with material and activities at their correct level of difficulty), or if your child would benefit from a different adult in addition to their family member, to assist with academics. Often, students work in a different manner for someone who isn't their family member, especially when it comes to school work, which can be a relief for families! We can meet once per week, or several times per week. It is completely dependent upon what would be best for your learner.

I hold a current teaching certificate, along with a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading Specialist endorsement and a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with an ELL endorsement and 13 years of elementary general education teaching experience in a public school in the USA. All lessons and curriculum that I use follows research backed by the Science of Reading, a body of knowledge that has shown how our brains learn to read. I have taught (and loved) many students with a wide variety of additional needs, such as dyslexia, autism, or learning/focus/behavior challenges that make reading tricky. I have specialized training in Orton Gillingham techniques and several hours of reading and research devoted to learning about Science of Reading. Also, I have plenty of experience with high ability learners and always try my best to challenge them to read and comprehend at advanced levels.

For Kindergarten-2nd grade Reading and Spelling, I use the structure of scientifically-backed reading strategies to explicitly teach phonemic awareness, phonics, reading, and comprehension, and aim each session to increase students' confidence in reading and increase their overall academic success. I am experienced in using multi-sensory strategies, which involve the use of visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile strategies to enhance memory and learning of written language. Your child will receive structured literacy lessons each time we meet for class. Depending on the needs of the learner and which lessons I believe will fit best, we may use curriculum from UFLI Foundations, EBLI, multisyllabic practices, or other structured literacy engaging lessons.

In a phonics/ decoding lesson, students will actively engage in practices that include: reading and reviewing sounds in words, blending to make new words, explicit phonics skill instruction, sentence reading, reading decodable readers (short stories) that apply the phonics skill of the day, a building/ spelling words while applying the phonics skill(s) we are targeting that lesson.

Third grade (in my state anyway) is when rigorous state testing begins, so if I am working with a 3rd grade learner, we would focus on what the learner needs, but also incorporate engaging reading comprehension skills and strategies, with some fun test prep games blended in to help them show proficiency on their norm-referenced tests.

Here are some examples of topics that I have years of experience teaching and tutoring, which could be chosen to be instructed, practiced, and mastered within our sessions:

-Reading: phonemic awareness (sound deletion, sound segmentation, syllabication, rhyming, sound substitution), phonics (short vowels, consonant blends, 3-letter blends, digraphs, magic "e", r-controlled vowels, vowel teams, diphthongs, silent letters, consonant+le, etc), spelling using common spelling patterns, rule-breakers, and phonics patterns, sight word recognition, decodable readers, reading fluency practices, reading comprehension (identify main idea, compare and contrast texts, reading to learn with informational text, summarizing, informational text features, story retell using story elements, author's purpose, etc), guided writing, and grammar skills application. I also have EL students in both my online and in-person classrooms, and I love creating lessons to improve and increase speaking confidence.

Correspondence via the Outschool message center will be made with the parent or caregiver prior to the first class to determine the course of action needed, and so I can begin preparing materials that are unique to your child's academic needs. I will provide detailed feedback to the parent or caregiver after each session so you are kept in the loop of your child's strengths and areas that still need attention. Please let me know if you'd like a different time (I try to accommodate requests), multiple sessions per week, or if we'd need a longer or shorter session to best meet your child's needs.) I will check the classroom and parent private messages frequently so we can stay in close contact and help your learner reach their full potential. We are a team, who both want the very best for your learner. Let's partner together on this fun and educational journey to building confidence and skills in literacy!

I believe learning should be hands-on, engaging, and meaningful. Relationships are everything, and I strive to get to know each of my learners and earn their trust, so they are willing to take risks and make and learn from their mistakes while on their academic journey. Let's partner together to help your learner be and feel successful as a developing reader and writer. I can’t wait to meet my new online students!
