The content will be determined based on student need and parent request.  An informal reading and/or writing assessment will be used to guide my instruction.  I like to utilize content that students like.  So, if your student enjoys Fly Guy we will work with Fly Guy to read and write.  Topics can be changed to keep the content engaging.  

I tend to use a teach, model and release style of teaching.  A mini-lesson will be taught, a task will be modeled by the teacher and the student will then do the task with guidance from the teacher.  However, vocabulary games and other activities will be included to engage the learner.  

Students will work with me 1-1 and will be able to ask questions, play games and interact with the instructor.

The Common Core asks students to read stories and literature, as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they’ve read. This stresses critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills that are required for success in college, career, and life.

The skills and knowledge captured in the ELA/literacy standards are designed to prepare students for life outside the classroom. They include critical-thinking skills and the ability to closely and attentively read texts in a way that will help them understand and enjoy complex works of literature. Students will learn to use cogent reasoning and evidence collection skills that are essential for success in college, career, and life. The standards also lay out a vision of what it means to be a literate person who is prepared for success in the 21st century.

Using strategies to construct the meaning of unfamiliar words. Analyze elements and style of different genres of literature. Use text evidence to analyze, infer, and synthesize ideas.

Focuses on phonics, fluency, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing processes and more. The goal for the program is to help students develop strategies for active reading and clear writing.


Close Reading is a skill that requires students to determine purpose and notice features and language used by the author so that they can think thoughtfully and methodically about the details in the text and why they were used.


The seven skills are: • Collaboration • Communication • Creativity • Critical Thinking • Character • Citizenship • Computational Thinking If we believe our work as teachers is mainly to prepare students for successful futures, then we should give opportunities for students to strengthen these skills.
