Learners will spend 50 minutes each week discussing the various details of an Emily Windsnap book by Liz Kessler. During the meetings, learners will be encouraged to read with a purpose, share points of view and discuss literary themes. Each lesson will begin with each learner having the opportunity to share "good things" with the rest of the class. This helps the club members bond which then enhances class discussions later in the lesson. Next, each lesson will discuss theme, characterization, plot structure and setting elements. In addition, each week will have a different literary emphasis and discussion focus. Learners will know the topic in advance in order to help develop their critical reading skills. Although these book club classes will be fun and social, I will also build real-world skills such as critical thinking, creativity and communication during each lesson. There are nine books in this series, and I will offer one book rotation in the fall and another in the spring. Learners do not have to attend all sessions since we will be discussing each book separately. The scope and sequence is as follows: Week of September 1: The Tail of Emily Windsnap (Book 1) Round and Flat Characters Protagonist and Antagonist Character Development Week September 8: Emily Windsnap and the Monster from the Deep (Book 2) Exposition Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution Week September 15: Emily Windsnap and the Castle in the Mist (Book 3) Symbolism Week September 22: Emily Windsnap and the Siren's Secret (Book 4) Figurative Language Week September 29: Emily Windsnap and the Land of the Midnight Sun (Book 5) Inference Conclusions Week October 6 : Emily Windsnap and the Ship of Lost Souls (Book 6) Theme Main Idea Week October 13: Emily Windsnap and the Falls of Forgotten Island Opinions supported through details Descriptive words Week October 20: Emily Windsnap and the Pirate Prince Character Motivation Week October 27: Emily Windsnap and the Tides of Time Text to self Text to text Text to world
