Experiencia de clase

In this class, students will get an introduction to the elements of the periodic table in terms that they can understand! Each week will feature several elements, their uses, and their properties. Students will complete a handout for each element with its name, symbol, atomic number, uses, and properties that will be presented during class by the instructor and upload it to the classroom. There will also be an element scavenger hunt each week where students will be asked to find examples of as many of that week's elements as they can and upload photos of them to the classroom (a guide will be provided to parents with ideas for the harder-to-find elements!)
--------------------------------------------------------

Week 4- Mighty Metals- Part 2

-------------------------------------------------------
Structure of each week:
Each week, I will make several posts in the classroom.
Post 1: A post with links to videos discussing each of the following:
    - that week's overall topic
    - each element, their uses, and their properties

Post 2: A post with the handout files for each week. The files will feature a place for students to draw or cut out photos of examples of uses, as well as fill in information provided during the videos about the element's name, symbol, atomic number, and properties. There will be a separate file with that week's scavenger hunt items. I will also include a set of additional activity sheets for each week to further extend learning on each set of elements.

Post 3: A post where learners share their favorite element that they learned about that week with a few sentences or a short video saying why that's their favorite.

Post 4: A post where learners can upload photos of that week's scavenger hunt items and comment on each other's finds.

At the end of each week, before uploading the next week's material, I will make a video post discussing what they shared in the classroom on their handouts, what they found in the scavenger hunt, what my handouts looked like for that week, and any additional questions or comments regarding our interactions in the classroom.

Instructor and Learner Interaction:
Learners can interact with each other by sharing their handouts and scavenger hunt items, as well as by asking and answering questions about them. Learners can interact with the instructor by being able to ask additional questions about elements and by responding to comments and questions that the instructor leaves on their work. Instructor will interact with students by leaving comments and questions on their work.

I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with almost two decades of teaching experience. I have 7 years of experience in the high school classroom and four years of experience teaching online through Outschool. I have also done private tutoring at the high school and college level, taught freshman college chemistry recitations and labs, and worked in various science outreach settings including museums, middle school after school science programs, and science summer camps. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest, ability, and motivation- from preschoolers wide-eyed at everything in science to high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never-ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
